Kinect & a projector required.
During the first day of their annual Intel Developer Forum, Intel showed off a new concept called “Display without Boundaries” which allows one to use any surface as a multi-touch display.
According to ChipChick, this simple feat can be achieved using a Microsoft Kinect, any projector and a flat or even rounded surface. The special ingredient is Intel’s own software algorithm that reads data input off the surface (using the Kinect) which is being shown via the projector.
Intel showed off the project first on a bowl, displaying the prowess of the algorithm, that accurate readings can be had even on curved surfaces. The second demo showed Instagram images which were tagged by the emotional impact they had, rating images based on a mood map, rather than thumbs up or down.
While the later is certainly an interesting way to share important parts of your life, the concept of the “Display without Boundaries” is the interesting thing here. And even though it’s still a concept, the fact that it’s possible to achieve with regular off the shelve items is remarkable and shows what to expect in the near future.
