The ML63 is powered by a handmade 5.5-liter twin turbo engine that makes 518HP @ 5,250RPM and a tire-shredding 700Nm of torque @ 1,750-5,000RPM. That’s enough power to push the 2.2-ton hulk of a vehicle from 0-100kmph in just 5.4 seconds!

The 7G-Tronic transmission keeps the power output in check, with the Sports mode giving you the incredible drive you’d expect from an AMG tuned vehicle.  Interestingly there’s no indication of current fuel consumption on the trip computer, although there is a stopwatch to measure your track times. AMG knows what really matters with the ML63!

The suspension has three modes: Comfort, Sports and Sports+. Each of the sports mode stiffens up the suspension to give you lesser body roll and lowered height, coupled with the Sports mode on the gear, ends up transforming the ML63 from a respectable suburban SUV into a ferocious monster that will chew up and spit out any road you take it on.

Even when the suspension is set to Comfort and the gearbox set to Eco mode, the ML63 doesn’t fail to impress. At no time does the ML63 simply ‘passes by’; the potency of the engine is always relayed through the deep rumble and slight trembling of the objects around you.

To date I haven’t heard a more red-blooded, overpowering V8 than the AMG tuned 5.5-liter M157 engine. Whether it’s idling, running or pushed to its limits, the ML63 is a beautiful symphony of pistons and hot air.

The M class has its own merits, and indeed the ML63 has all the luxuries you’d expect from a top-end Mercedes vehicle. However, the AMG tuned powerhouse is bought not simply to transport the kids around town, but do it in such a devilishly powerful manner that anyone will think twice before messing with you or the rest of your family.
