Apple TV got updated yesterday to support Hulu Plus which is a subscription based service in the US that offers the latest TV programs on demand for a flat fee of US$7.99 per month. I tweeted that the news doesn’t really mean much for us living in the Middle East as neither Hulu nor Apple TV are officially supported in the region.
However, The Next Web posted a story that Hulu Plus does work on Apple TV outside the US as long as you use your US based iTunes account to subscribe to it. I decided to put this to test as I have a valid US iTunes account (I used to live in the US) and I have the latest Apple TV which updated it’s software and brought the Hulu Plus icon on Apple TV. I signed up for Hulu Plus subscription through Apple TV using my iTunes account and after the registration, was brought into the App. However, selecting any TV Show or movies resulted in the following screenshot.
The Geo Restriction is very much in place, much like it is with other services like Netflix and BBC iPlayer and contrary to what you read, I have done first-hand tests that it does not work- at least not in the UAE. About the only things that do work on the Hulu Plus App on Apple TV are movie trailers- but I doubt anyone would want to pay eight bucks per month for that when you can watch them for free.
