iPhone 5 to have smaller 19-pin dock connector

What will happen to your $300 speaker dock?

Reuters reports that the next iPhone will have a new smaller 19 pin dock connector port. This will make room for the headphone jack that will join the new dock connector on the bottom of the device.

The current 30 pin version is being used in almost all of Apple’s portable products from the iPod to the iPad. It is 21mm wide and its elimination will perhaps allow for new product designs such as a larger battery or smaller form factor, but it would also mean that existing iPhone accessories will not work with Apple’s latest device. Millions of iPhone users with who have spent serious cash on speaker docks and other peripheries will not be a happy bunch.

While not yet announced, one assumes that Apple will bring out an adapter to support accessories. One also assumes that such an adapter wouldn’t be free.

While we ponder on that, analysts say that this is good news for the iPhone accessories industry which could use this opportunity to usher in new business.

No it won’t usher in new business for accessories. It will just delay people from getting the iphone 5 until adaptors made by cheap chinese companies come into in the market. expect complains and market share loss for Apple. bear in mind that accessories can cost as much as the bloody phone so I can’t imagine people just throwing it all out the window to get new stuff during the world economic crisis…
