Did we just go back in time?
According to a Bloomberg tweet Facebook is working with mobile phone manufacturer HTC on a device that will be released mid-2013.
Rumours about a Facebook smartphone have been making appearances over the last 2 years. It may also be remembered that HTC has, in the recent past, released phones with dedicated Facebook buttons, but here we go again.
When contacted, Facebook refused to comment on the details of the Bloomberg tweet, but said,
“Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social,” Facebook representative Ana Brekalo said. “We’re working across the entire mobile industry — with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”
Is that a roundabout way of saying yes? There hasn’t been a comment from HTC.
While many question the need for such a device in a market that’s already crowded with smartphones with Facebook capabilities, the company could use a shot in the arm to placate concerns dragging down the company’s shares. More than half of Facebook’s 900 million users access the social network through their mobile devices but Facebook hasn’t been able to monetize this yet. As one analyst put it, ‘They could then put a lot of ads onto the platform.’
