Guaranteed to cause drooling over design.

Good: Beautiful design, incredible 1080p performance and Magic Remote works well
Bad: 720p content doesn't scale well, some Smart Apps need to be smarter

So LG has certainly gotten it right with features and the design of their new LM9600 series but how does it fare with picture quality? LG has developed a Nano Full LED backlighting technology based on a thin film imprinted with LEDs. The TV’s S-IPS panel is further enhanced by local dimming to output inkier blacks and a 400Hz refresh rate for smoother and sharper pictures. All that translates into a picture quality that is nothing short of stunning when watching full high-definition 1080p picture. The Burj Khalifa scene in mission impossible looks breathtaking- as though it was designed to showcase this TV.

As good as movies look at 1080p,  content at 720p sadly don’t look as impressive and you can tell lack of sharpness- something other full 1080p displays handle pretty well. Another area where the LG fell a little short was with high-speed videos where resolution is lower than 1080p- I was able to spot ghosting quite a few times- again something I haven’t seen in other displays. Interestingly, SD content upscales well- better than some of the other 1080p displays I’ve come across but 720p is where this display loses its shine.

Coming to 3D, LG continues to be on the passive side of technology choosing to ignore the active-shutter glasses that almost all other vendors are using. While this results in a less impressive picture quality, it also reduces the headaches that many people, including myself, face when watching 3D content. I was able to watch 3D for almost an hour on the LG without suffering from a migraine- that’s not something I can say about active shutter technology where ten minutes is more than what I can handle.

So what’s the verdict? The LG 55LM96 is a pretty impressive display when it comes to full HD 1080p content. It’s also beautiful to look at and boasts an impressive set of features. However, it’s non-HD performance isn’t as great as some of the other TV sets so it really depends on what you’re planning on watching. Priced at AED 13,999 (US$3800), the LG 55LM96 is about what you would pay for the latest/greatest 55” model from a top-tier manufacturer.
