The hottest hatch of them all?

Good: Great performance in Sports mode, very deep exhaust note, stylistic improvements in body design, XDS system makes the car stick to corners.
Bad: Performance under normal "D" mode feels inadequate, not much visual distinction from regular Scirocco, "tuner" feeling isn't something everyone may enjoy.
Price: AED 125,600 (base), AED 149,000 (as tested)

The Volkswagen Scirocco’s revival a few years ago brought to the automotive industry one of the most sharp looking and decent performing hatch seen in ages. A segment that was stagnating for a decade got a shot in the arm with this radical new car from the Germans (who else?!) and since then the Scirocco has been a favorite on the roads of UAE.

Today I’ll be looking at the much awaited “R” version of the Scirocco that was introduced in our region a scant 4 months back.

On the outside the Scirocco R looks very similar to the regular Scirocco; the differences are minimal compared to the massive design changes between the Golf R vs the regular GTI. The front of the Scirocco R gets the most obvious change, with three large air intakes and sculpted lip below. Similar to the Golf R we get the daylight LEDs just above two of the intakes. Apart from that we have a small “R” logo on the front grill towards the left.

From the side the most prominent change is the 19-inch Talladega alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber, although I much prefer the original spindle wheels on the regular Scirocco. Furthermore we have side skirts under the main door which beautifully complements the curvaceous body of the Scirocco.

On the back we have a glossy black diffuser which you will hardly ever notice, although the two large chrome tailpipes sticking out do make an impression. The rear end is devoid of any other insignia save for the “R” logo. And despite what VW claims, the rear roof spoiler looks pretty much the same as that on the regular Scirocco.
