The Internet Show and The Mobile show is currently going on in Dubai, UAE and RIM has a big presence there in the form of a booth as well as a lounge where users can come in and charge their devices. One of the things that RIM is doing is upgrading their batch of OS7 devices to OS7.1 and you can bring in your Bold or Curve or Torch to get the latest OS version.

While OS 7.1 is available on the web for pretty much all new BlackBerry Smartphones, owners of Porsche Design P’9981 were left in the dark. However, starting next week, they will also be able to upgrade their super-expensive device to the latest OS7.1. I took my particular unit and got it upgraded as the following video shows.

[youtube video=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiQbb0DItn4&feature=youtu.be&w=600]

You get all the goodness associated with OS 7.1 in this upgrade including the Battery Saver mode, Device Analyzer and Wi-Fi hot Spot capabilities.

Press Release:

Western Digital, today announced it is now shipping the new WD VelociRaptor 1 TB hard drive, the latest addition to its award-winning drive family, the largest capacity 10,000 RPM hard drive on the market today. Designed for high-performance PCs, Mac computers and professional workstations that require a balance of high performance and capacity, the WD VelociRaptor drive is a favorite among enthusiasts and creative professionals. The WD VelociRaptor will also come in capacities of 500 GB and 250 GB.

Leveraging enterprise-class mechanics to provide 24×7 durability under high-performance workloads, the new WD VelociRaptor 1 TB hard drive is geared for creative professionals who demand the ultimate SATA drive. Creative pros use write-intensive applications that manage large, dynamic files; for example, video editing and digital content creation and management, which ultimately put a strain on storage devices that utilize write-challenged NAND memory for performance enhancement. WD VelociRaptor’s outstanding read and write performance across the entire disk capacity make it a perfect match for the creative professional and enthusiast who want to optimize their tools, enhance productivity, and increase storage space at the same time.

“WD is committed to providing customers with the best performing and most reliable SATA hard drives and our WD VelociRaptor family of drives underscores that promise,” said Khwaja Saifuddin Ahmad, Senior Sales Director, Middle East, Africa & South Asia. “With ever-increasing demand for greater capacity, the new 1 TB WD VelociRaptor drive delivers the ultimate combination of speed and storage for the power user.”

The WD VelociRaptor 2.5-inch hard drive comes in the IcePack enclosure, a 3.5-inch mounting frame with built-in heat sink – a factory customization that fits the drive into a standard 3.5-inch system bay and keeps the powerful drive extra cool when installed in a high-performance desktop or workstation system.

Features of the WD VelociRaptor hard drives include:

  • Super speed – SATA 6 Gb/s interface and 64 MB cache optimize the 10,000 RPM WD VelociRaptor.
  • Higher capacity – WD VelociRaptor SATA hard drives employ Advanced Format Technology to achieve capacities up to 1 TB.
  • Rock-solid reliability – Designed and manufactured to workstation standards to deliver stellar reliability in high workload environments.
  • Ultra-cool operation – Consumes less idle power and uses similar active power as the previous generation WD VelociRaptor while offering greater capacity and performance.
  • Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF™) – Optimizes operation and performance when the drives are used in vibration-prone, multi-drive chassis.
  • NoTouch ramp load technology – The recording head never touches the disk media ensuring significantly less wear to the recording head and media as well as better drive protection when in transit.
  • Environmentally conscious – In addition to being RoHS-compliant, this generation of WD VelociRaptor is also a halogen-free design.

Price and Availability
WD VelociRaptor hard drives are available now at select distributors, resellers and e-tailers, and come with a five-year limited warranty. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the WD VelociRaptor 1 TB (model #: WD1000DHTZ) is $319.99 USD, the 500 GB version (model #: WD5000HHTZ) is $209.99 USD and the 250 GB version (model #: WD2500HHTZ) is $159.99 USD. More information about WD VelociRaptor hard drives including terms of the limited warranty may be found on the company website at http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=20.

Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB Hard Drive Review

“Users can expect a 25% increase (according to WD) in performance and we saw sequential read/write scores that exceeded the rated specifications of 200MB/s. This is supported by a large 64MB cache to help buffer data. Overall, for a spinning platter drive, performance was very good and it’s a bit amazing that they’ve been able to get so much capacity in a drive with the platters rotating at 10,000 RPM. With such speeds, you’d expect the drive to be noisy but even on our open test bed, the noise was…”

Quote: “Western Digital has done well to keep the VelociRaptor
pedigree alive with this new 1TB model. We saw notable imporvements
across the board, as well as some very impressive throughput figures
breaking the 200MB/sec mark. While spinning disks have a ways to go
before they can compete with solid state, the new VelociRaptor does
extremely well and tops all other spinning disks out there, at a
cost/GB way cheaper than any SSD!”

Noctua NH-L12 Low-Profile CPU Cooler Review

Strangely enough although the latest LGA2011 Sandy Bridge CPUs are the hottest thing currently, at least in terms of processing power there still aren’t that many new cooling solutions in the market that support them and since i decided on starting over with a brand new LGA2011 based CPU Cooler database (the old LGA1366 one was way too long) this has proven to be quite the problem. Thankfully aside the huge NH-D14 SE2011 CPU Cooler Noctua has also launched another LGA2011 compatible CPU Cooler the latest low-profile NH-L12 which although targeted towards HTPC users and not hardcore overclockers and enthusiasts still it carries quite a punch for its size as you will see later on.

Google Drive launching next week with 5GB for everyone

Google’s long rumored cloud storage service finally has some solid information leakage. The Next Web has gotten an early draft release from one of Google’s partners that has info on Google Drive. Apparently it will be coming out some time next week, bets are hedged on Tuesday or Wednesday (24th or 25th April). The service will be free for all Gmail account holders with 5GB of base storage given to everyone. Additional storage can obviously be purchased, but there’s no announcement on pricing details and packages.

One of the most popular free cloud storage program is Dropbox, which has apps for Android and iOS devices for extremely easy file share, editing and syncing. How Google Drive will face off against it remains to be seen, although in-app file editing seems to be possible.

The screenshots leaked from Talk Android two weeks ago also seem to add more fuel to this fire, with the release of Google Drive imminent. We’ll have more details availble as the story develops, but don’t be surprised to hear an official announcement from Google very soon.
