Decade long legacy comes to an end.
Sony announced today that their acquisition of the Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson’s 50% stake in Sony Ericsson joint venture has finally been completed.
Costing an approximate $1.3 billion the acquisition now gives Sony Corp. full control of the Sony Ericsson brand name. As such, the first order of the day was to rename the popular brand name to ‘Sony Mobile Communications’. In recent years Sony Ericsson has slipped from one of the top mobile manufacturers in the wake of the recent smartphones surge after the release of Apple’s iPhone. And despite a number of Android based smartphones released over the past two years, they still haven’t found a strong footing in the global market. With the rebranding, Sony hopes to reignite the global popularity of their mobile phones once again.
The new Sony Xperia S will the first Sony only branded phone that will be launched next month in March. Henceforth all smartphones released by Sony Mobile Communications will be Sony only branded. Let’s pay our last respects to a huge brand name with which many of have had many memories, and welcome a new era of smartphones.
