While we constantly use abstract terms and descriptions to describe just how big and far reaching the internet is, Pingdom has taken it upon themselves to provide us with actual numbers and statistics about the internet.

In a recent article, Pingdom has published a list of numbers and statistics about what took place on the internet during 2011, as well as some general descriptions about the internet’s population. I have to admit, there’s some really interesting stuff in there

  • - There are 2.1 billion internet users worldwide (that’s about 30% of the world’s population)
  • - 922.2 million users are in Asia, 476.2 million users in Europe, 271.1 million users in North America, and 68.6 million users in the Middle East
  • - The country with the highest number of internet users is China, with 485 million internet users
  • - There 555 million websites on the internet, 300 million of which were created in 2011
  • - There are 3.146 billion e-mail accounts in the world, and the largest e-mail service is Hotmail, with 360 million users
  • - 71% percent of all e-mail traffic in 2011 was spam
  • - There were 800 million accounts on Facebook by 2011, 200 million of which were created in 2011
  • - There are 225 million Twitter accounts, 100 million of which are active. The number of Tweets per day is 250 million
  •  - Lady Gaga is the most popular Twitter user, with 18.1 million followers
  • - #egypt was the number one hashtag in 2011
  • - 48 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
  • - The number of video playbacks on YouTube is 1 trillion
  • - The number of videos viewed online on various websites is 201.4 billion
