Asked to stop using the BBM trademark or pay up.
Recently, RIM faced a blow when a company sued them for the use of the BBX trademark that they’re using for their upcoming line of phones and actually won the rights to it (RIM changed it to Blackberry 10). Looks like the result of that case urged another company to sue RIM for a different and much longer around trademark this time – BBM.
Reuters reports that a company called BBM Canada, which does radio/television audience reasearch in the country where RIM is based in, has sued the company for trademark infrigement saying that RIM either stop using the BBM trademark or pay up to BBM Canada for changing their name. Pretty smart tactic used by them right there, although this time around it’s unlikely to win. The main reason for that is while BBX was a new trademark and the plaintiffs there sued in a timely manner, BBM has been RIM’s term since a lot of years and is universally associated to Blackberry Messenger. Coming out with a lawsuit this late doesn’t make sense and is nothing more than a money-grab.
But you never kn0w – RIM is not technically in its best days so anything can happen.
