Internet Explorer will begin to automatically update for XP users onwards

Microsoft aims to rid the word of the evil called Internet Explorer 6.

It’s been quite a long time and three new versions since Internet Explorer 6 was the latest version of the browser, but you’d be surprised to see how many people still rock that browser like it’s 2005. I’ve personally seen it being used in school and college libraries as well as workplaces that just don’t give a damn. Well, Microsoft is now definitively stepping in to take action.

Over at Exploring IE web blog, Ryan Gavin who is the General Manager for Internet Explorer Business and Marketing announces that come January of 2012, Microsoft will automatically begin to update the browser to the latest version for users of XP, Vista and Windows 7. This update will begin in Australia and Brazil but will slowly dole out to everywhere. It will only apply to people who have Automatic Updates enabled so it still doesn’t cover every single person. This is what he says:

We want to make updating to the best protection possible as fast and simple as we can for Windows customers. IE is how millions of Windows customers connect to the Web, so keeping that part of Windows updated at all times is critical to keeping them safe online. With automatic updates enabled through Windows Update, customers can receive IE9 and future versions of Internet Explorer seamlessly without any “update fatigue” issues.

If you don’t want this to happen, there are toolkits you can download to exclude this update. But seriously, upgrade your IE. Version 6 is an outdated mess of a browser and you’re only punishing your PC with a slow agonising death. If you listen hard enough, you will be able to hear its screams from the speakers.
