Interestingly when the videos were being downloaded on my PC, I was getting a maximum of 1.9Mbps transfer speeds, but on the MBA the speed hovered around 2.8 to 3Mbps. All types of files played back on WMP11, obviously because I had all the relevant codecs installed on my PC.

The PC interface.

Another point I’d like to bring to light is that when the GoFlex Satellite is connected via USB, the WiFi immediately stops working, upon disconnection it’ll resume again. Speaking of connections, I connected one laptop, one iPhone 4 and one MacBook Air to the GoFlex Satellite, all of them streaming videos just fast enough for smooth playback.Note that while songs and pictures playback immediately, movies take a couple of seconds to start.

I then moved the iPhone 4 ten meters away from the GoFlex Satellite, outside the office, with multiple glass doors in between and, of course, some gypsum walls. While normal .mp4 videos played back fine, a high quality .m4v video (intended for use with iPads) had choppy to almost unplayable playback. Not such a big deal, I did have quite a lot of interference from all the other wireless signals flying around the office, not to mention all the physical obstacles in between the iPhone 4 and the GoFlex Satellite.

Battery life was a hit & miss, with me averaging around 4 to 4.5 hours from full charge to complete battery drain. However, the power options in the GoFlex combat this issue for really long journeys. The DC input has two cables, one with a USB port so it can be connected to any computer, and one with a car cigarette lighter, for those really long drives.

At the end of the day, the GoFlex satellite provides a very elegant solution to the limited storage problems of our mobile devices. However, due to compatibility limitations and poor battery life, the GoFlex Satellite doesn’t get a chance to flourish. The range is moderately good, but the streaming speeds are very impressive. Especially the fact that it comes with a USB 3.0 connector means that storage and transfer of files is a quick process.
