SmartShell vs PixelSkin vs Otter Box
Our last contender is the Otter Box Defender Series case. This case is built for abuse, and from the photos you can see just how rugged this case is. By far, this was the most complicated case to put together, and required complete disassembly of the case. First I had to remove the thick protective rubber around the case. Then pry open the snaps holding the case together. Then I had to slide in the iPad, snap the cover on, attach the rubber casing, lock it into place, and only then was it ready.
This case is by far built for people who take their iPad 2 wherever they go, most likely on a desert safari or on a tour of an active volcano. The case adds plenty of weight and girth to your iPad 2, and it isn’t the most comfortable thing to hold in your hand, although the textured plastic at the back helps somewhat. If you want to prop up the iPad 2, you need to snap off the plastic attachment at the back, raise a small section in the middle, and then prop up the iPad 2 using that. It’s all somewhat laborious, and you can only prop up the iPad in one direction, which is for typing. But having said all that, the Otter Box is a tough cookie, and cushions your iPad 2 from unintentional knocks and bumps. I don’t know if it might survive an accidental fall from a table, and I’m not about to try and test that theory. But for the most part, it provides some pretty sturdy protection for your precious iPad 2.
Likes: Sturdy case for those using an iPad 2 in external environments.
Dislikes: Considerable effort to assemble, can only prop the iPad 2 in one direction, not comfortable for holding.
So there you have it folks, our round up of three iPad 2 cases that will cater to different crowds and needs. Whether you want a simple sleek cover like the SmartShell, or all over protection with the PixelSkin, or even rugged protection with the Otter Box, go out there and clothe your beloved new iPad.
