Just swap out the lenses.

During the IFA this year in Berlin, LG displayed two of their new upcoming direct LED TV sets coming in 47″ and 55″ flavors. While the benefits of direct LED compared to edge-lit LED TVs can be left for another time, what interests us the most are the ‘Dual Play’ gaming capabilities of these sets.

The technology is very simple: instead of a 3D image being shown (with 2 frames of the same image), it shows two separate images on the same screen. Viewed normally, this will just look like a jumbled image; but when each of the two players view their ‘side’ of the screen, they will see two full screen images of their game. This technology is similar to the Sony PlayStation TV displayed during E3 earlier this year. However the Sony TV uses active shutter glasses, plus it’s only limited to 24″.

The LG TV uses passive 3D with polaroid glasses. According to LG, all Cinema 3D TVs will be capable of this Dual Play tech, presumably with a future firmware upgrade, once these new direct LED TV sets are out in the market some time in October. The best part is how easy it is to have the Dual Play system. The polaroid glasses have one set which just has two left side lenses and the another which has two right side lenses. Unlike typical polaroid glasses which have one left and one right lens for the human eye to experience the 3D effect, these polaroid glasses with switched lenses will allow people to view full screen split-screen games from a completely left and right side perspective. We’ll have more info on this as and when LG releases the 55LW980T and 47LW980T direct LED TV sets here.
