Arpadia – IM style conversations via email on your phone
July 28, 2011 by karar

Arpadia is a messaging app for Android and iOS that uses standard email protocol to send small messages or media files just like you were doing instant messaging or threaded SMS / MMS. This brings forth a fresh and fast approach when it comes to email on phone. Normally you wouldn’t send long emails through your phone, so this app removes all that red tape of big email client, this software just allow quick short email messages.
The best part of Arpadia is that even if the recipients do not have the app (or a smartphone for that matter), they can still receive messages through regular email as it uses standard email to communicate. Any message sent through Arpadia automatically reaches the mail inbox of the recipient whereas replies to all such messages are carried back to you via Arpadia mail service. However, Arpadia’s ‘mail messaging’ is best experienced if the sender and recipient are both using the app on their devices.

Apple patents key-free touch sensitive keyboard design

A new Apple patent application has surfaced revealing an entirely flat, touch-sensitive keyboard that may come in future MacBooks. We’ve already seen similar touchscreen keyboards on real world products including the Acer Iconia 6102 and the Toshiba Libretto W100, but the Apple patent application details several different ways of building the flat surface keyboard. Apple explains that the flat keyboard would detect inputs using a combination of piezo-electric sensors and capactive sensors. It also describes versions of the design with seisometers and accelerometers added into the mix to better detect the way the user is interacting with the surface.
One method suggests it could be constructed from a solid material such as metal or plastic with keys machined, stamped or micro-perforated onto it to allow the user to press or tap a flat key. The more radical approach though would be to use a piece of glass with the interface provided as graphics on a display screen beneath the surface. The keyboard would have LED backlighting for lowlight situations.
There is no announcement that when a product based on this will be see light of the day. But for now they have lots of work to do, as the biggest problem with touchscreen keys is the lack of sense of touch. You can tap around your keyboard all day long with looking at the keys but you can never do that with a touch screen keyboard. Plus the instant key registration by just touch is another reason for lots of typing errors rather than the thinking time spent in pressing a mechanical key. Apple does plan a haptic feedback mechanism would be included to let you know you’d actually hit a key but how that will work is not known in detail. I see this as a long shot from actual commercial product for now. The touch keyboards may have become dominant on mobile phones due to lack of space and aim to provide larger view area, but same is not true for laptops or desktops. Lets see if Apple can really come up with an innovative design that really changes how we use keyboard today.
MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3) Motherboard Review

With the new Z68 based boards finally released, MSI provided us with one of their high-end boards, the Z68A-GD80 (with B3 revision) for review. As an over-$200 motherboard, the Z68A-GD80 comes with all the bells & whistles you’d expect from a board in that price range.
Let’s take it from the top then. This LGA 1155 based motherboard comes with the new Z68 Intel chipset, which means SSD caching comes stock. Then there’s the LucidLogix Virtu chip as well that helps use the Intel QuickSync feature to utilize Sandy bridge processors for faster video transcoding in software that supports this (e.g. Arcsoft MediaConverter and CyberLink MediaEspresso). Apart from that there’s the THX TruStudio Pro sound chip that provides exquisite 8.1 HD surround sound. The rest of the board is pretty standard, with 3xPCIe x16 slots, 4x SATA II and 3x SATA III ports, 4x USB 3.0 ports and 10x USB 2.0 ports.
The board is topped off with Military Class components and solid Hi-c capacitors, super ferrite chokes and solid CAPs. The UEFI BIOS is very easy and intuitive to control, although not as nicely categorized as I would’ve preferred. The OC Genie II allows one button simple overclocking, which overclocked our Core i7-2600K from 3.4GHz up to 4.2GHz without me making any further changes in the BIOS.

Press Release:
BBM (BlackBerry® Messenger), one of the largest mobile social networks in the world is now enabling a new and revolutionary social experience. Research In Motion (RIM) today announced the availability of BBM version 6 (BBM 6), which provides support for “BBM connected” apps, allowing users to easily interact with each other from within the BBM connected app.
BBM connected apps integrate the popular functionality of the BBM service and offer users the ability to interact with their friends from within the app itself. For example, with a BBM connected game app, users can invite their BBM friends to join them in a game and then chat with one another in real time while the game is being played – without ever leaving the game app.
BBM 6 launches today and a selection of BBM connected apps are already available on BlackBerry App World™.
“BBM 6 marks the beginning of an even greater social experience for BlackBerry smartphone users,” said Alistair Mitchell, VP, BBM Platform & Integrated Services at Research In Motion. “It also represents an incredible opportunity for developers to leverage the viral nature of the BBM service and we have already begun working with various developer partners who will be bringing their BBM connected apps to BlackBerry App World this week, offering users highly engaging app experiences.”
Some of the additional functionality users can expect to see with BBM connected applications include the ability to:
• Share app experiences with friends – When a user discovers a great new BBM connected app, they can instantly let their friends know about it. Users can simply select a BBM contact directly within the BBM connected app they are using.
• Have a BBM chat within apps – Users can simply pull up their BBM contact list directly from within the BBM connected app and start chatting. For example, the functionality can enable everything from enhanced social game play to collaboration through productivity apps.
• Discover apps through friends – Users can also discover new apps by viewing the list of apps that are posted to a BBM friend’s profile. They can also click on an app within the list, and instantly download it from BlackBerry App World.
The BBM 6 software will be available later today at www.blackberry.com/blackberrymessenger. A selection of BBM connected apps will also be posted on BlackBerry App World this week, with many more expected over the coming months.

Google: Software patents “gumming up” smartphone innovation

Name one mobile phone manufacturer that is not enrolled in a patent war. Go on. Nokia? Wrong. HTC? Wrong. Samsung? Lol. Apple? These guys started it.
So when Google’s general counsel Kent Walker laments about the fact that software patents are “gumming up” innovation in devices, we have to but nod in agreement.
“The tech industry has a significant problem,” Walker said. “Software patents are kind of gumming up the works of innovation.”
Walker takes a dig at Apple, saying, “We have seen an explosion of Android devices entering the market and, because of our successes, competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations.”
“Each side can blow the other up on some level –everybody can block the other’s products from coming to market. You create this mutually assured destruction scenario, but it’s very expensive to get all those munitions. Buying patents so you can hit the other guy, it’s not good form. You hate to unilaterally disarm here, but we haven’t in our history.”
Walker said the search giant is fully dedicated to back its Android manufacturers from the clutches of the lawsuit filers.
“We’ll be fine,” he said. “We have the resources to balance the scales here.”
Microsoft dev bets on Windows Phone 7, takes a dig at iPhone, Android in the process
July 27, 2011 by Mufaddal Fakhruddin

Microsoft seems to love dolling out Windows Phone 7 developer units to whoever complains about an iPhone or Android, provided your mug is well known.
The latest celebrity to be offered such a gesture was Scott Adams, the creator of the popular cartoon strip Dilbert. Adams posted a rant about Android the other day, lamenting about its poor battery life and call quality. Seizing the opportunity, Brandon Watson, Senior Director of Windows Phone 7, quickly offered Adams a Mango-updated WP7 unit for his trial. Watson went even further with deal, offering to pay $1000 to Adams’ choice of charity if he does not like the smartphone more than the iPhone or Android.
You can read the letter below.
Scott -
My name is Brandon Watson and I am responsible for the developer platform on Windows Phone. Since your readership has a high probability of cross over with our developer base, how about I make you a deal with one of the phones we reserve for developers. Take Windows Phone for a spin. I’ll send you a developer phone with the new Mango OS on it. Give it an honest run, and if you don’t love it more than either of your iPhone or Android experiences, I’ll make a $1000 donation to the charity of your choice. You can’t really lose on this deal.
Do we have 500K apps? No. Do we have 25K, growing as fast as iPhone did, and 2x as fast as Android? Yes. Do developers love the dev environment? Uh huh. Do we have the only phone that puts people and communications first? You bet. If Androids dream of electronic iSheep, people dream about people – and that’s what you will get with Windows Phone. Keep in constant contact with those most important to you with Live Tiles, groups, messaging threads, and native Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. And no special instructions on how to hold the phone to make calls. Oh, and the battery lasts a long time.
I can be reached at ThePhone [at] microsoft. You can call me if you want – 425-985-5568. Windows Phone devs will tell you that’s the right contact info, because it’s shared with every one of them.
I hope you take me up on this one…there’s no reason to hate your phone.
No word on if Adams agreed to the deal or not.

Boot to Geko: The Mozilla mobile OS project
July 27, 2011 by karar
Filed under Internet, Mobile Apps, News, Operating Systems
Mozilla, home to the brains behind Firefox, is planning to build its very own mobile OS. The project called Boot to Gecko or B2G broke cover on the Mozilla Developer Group yesterday. Its aim is to create a standalone operating system that will use web technologies to deliver all of its applications. This may sound very similar to Chrome OS, but the main difference is that Mozilla is focused on being mobile OS only. Interestingly, it plans to build Boot to Gecko on an Android foundation.
Dr Andreas Gal, a researcher at Mozilla, explained the plan for Boot to Gecko to developers. He says the project will take the primary functions of a mobile device (making calls, sending texts, accessing the camera, USB, Bluetooth and NFC) and build web APIs to handle them. That will then allow developers to create safe ways for web pages and web apps to access those functions.
The open-source project will take Android as its starting point but only at a very basic level using the kernel and drivers to make sure whatever they produce can actually be booted on hardware. If the team behind the project manage to get it off the ground it could open up the potential for a truly open-source mobile OS.
On a personal note, a web-only OS is something I would never prefer on my PC or mobile phone. Internet outage or low credit on GPRS handset could be catastrophic for such OS. I have personally used Chrome OS and didn’t like this aspect one bit. And if my phone starts to behave same way to manage phone operations and apps via web powered apps then this could mean less reliability, more data usage and rampant malware applications. Still, it’s very early days for the project to comment on its capabilities and flaws but we will be intrigued to see what Mozilla can come up with.
iPhone 5G concepts look like Sony Satio design with N8 colors
July 27, 2011 by karar
One look at the Apple iPhone 5G and two devices come to mind: the Sony Ericsson Satio and Nokia N8. By merging together those two concepts, Antoine Brieux from Nak Phone Design has managed to re-invent Apple’s flagship phone concept design.
The iPhone 5G concept pays homage to the iMac G3 days when Apple offered five colored, translucent plastic cases. Outside of its iPod line, Apple has relied on brush aluminum for its Macs and two colors for its iPhones. This concept shows 6 variety of colors while Nokia N8 is currently available in five similar colors.
Inside the iPhone 5G concept, not much will change compared to the current iPhone 4S/5 rumors. There’s an 8-megapixel camera with HD capture, LED notifications panel, and A5 dual-core processor. The real change over previous generation iPhones (and even Macs) is that the iPhone 5G will use a magnesium body. This will help Apple achieve its lightest and thinnest design to date.
I think when Apple goes into real production they will stick with traditional color choices, but the design and materials sound promising.
