Nvidia’s Kal-El chip has a competitor.
ARM has claimed that its upcoming Mali graphics processor will match the power and performance of curren-gen Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles within 18 months.
Speaking to Inquirer, ARM said that Moore’s Law was not the only way to achieve such processing muscle, and to make it happen it needs to “put huge amounts of computational power in the hands of developers”.
While achieving processing levels of a 6 year old hardware may not sound like much of a deal, but to imagine a similar visual experience of big budget games on the console as well on your smartphone or tablet is surely tempting. If ARM does manage to deliver on its claim, it will go directly against Nvidia’s Kal-El chip, due this year, which promises to have 14 times the power of current GPU chips in mobile device.
Interesting times are surely ahead.
