Popular free VOIP service comes to Google’s mobile platform.
Viber has dropped us word that it will soon be making its free VOIP service application available to Android users. The app will release in Beta form and will be available to users who have signed up for the Beta program at Viber.com. Additional invitations will be rolled out soon, as well.
Viber allows high-quality VOIP calls to be made directly from your smartphone. The app was previously only available to iPhone users, who will now also be able to make calls and send free text messages to Android users as well (vice versa, too, of course).
Viber will be tightly integrated with Android, and will offer the following features:
Broad Support for Android Devices:
This Beta release will support most Android devices. The application has been tested on over 20 of the most popular devices from Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson. However, given the large variety of devices on the market, Viber is relying on the community to help identify devices that may need additional work.
Just like the iPhone app, Viber’s new Android app lets users send free text messages to all of their Viber contacts. Users simply need to select the Viber contact that they want to text and tap “Free Text Message.”
Features Exclusive to Android:
Viber’s Android version includes the same user-friendly features included in the iPhone version, as well as some unique features:
- Full call screen: whenever a Viber call is received;
- Popup text message notification which allows users to respond to text messages without opening Viber;
- Tighter integration with the phone to allow users to see their regular call logs and messages inside Viber;
- Ability to set Viber as the phone’s default dialer so that users can use the Viber dialer for all of their phone calls, not just for Viber.
