Microsoft wins Gaming Retail Vendor of the Year and 2011 Best Product Innovation.
Microsoft Corp. has announced that it has won awards in two categories at the Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) 2011 Awards. The MERA 2011 Awards, which took place on May 18 in Fujairah, UAE, saw Microsoft awarded as the 2011 Gaming Retail Vendor of the Year for Xbox 360, and 2011 Best Product Innovation for its globally renowned Kinect for Xbox 360.
Aman Sangar, Product Marketing Manager, Interactive Entertainment Business, Microsoft Gulf commented, “We extend our gratitude to the retailers, customers and fans who helped recognise Microsoft in our commitment to providing a revolutionary user experience with Xbox 360 and Kinect for Xbox 360. Response to Kinect has been extraordinary, and we anticipate the excitement to multiply with the introduction of exciting, new upcoming Kinect titles.”
Other gaming and technology giants including EA, Logitech, Nintendo and Sony were nominated in the 2011 Gaming Retail Vendor of the Year category.
Launched in 2008, the annual MERA Awards see retailers evaluate pre-nominated vendors across a spectrum of criteria including: partner engagement, channel strategy, pricing, stock management, product evolution, margin potential, channel management and partner programme.
Nilesh Khalkho, CEO at Sharaf DG, one of the retailers present at the awards said: “Kinect for Xbox 360 has generated an unprecedented amount of interest since its arrival in stores last year. Popular with all age groups, the gaming sensor offers a unique experience as it is the first hands-free gaming experience of its kind. We are not surprised to see both Xbox 360 and Kinect getting recognition for being best in class and in fact we expect the demand for the Xbox 360 platform to grow as additional 2011 titles are introduced.”
Farouk Hemraj, CEO at Distree Events, organiser of the MERA 2011 Awards, said: “We would like to congratulate Microsoft for its two accolades at the Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) 2011 Awards. MERA is an independent body made up of senior executives from retailers, distributors and vendors operating in the MEA retail channel all of which are dedicated to developing this sector’s expertise. The awards have established a reputation for transparency and independence, and we are proud to recognise the great achievements that are taking place across our region in the retail sector.”
Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox 360, the controller-free gaming system, has recently entered the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest-selling gaming console, selling more than 10 million units since its launch last November.
