Control your BlackBerry from your Jaguar’s screen

VNC to the rescue

VNC has been around for the longest time controlling machines via remote desktops. In fact, if you use OS X, the screen share functionality to connect to another Mac is powered by VNC. At the BlackBerry World today, we saw a pretty awesome use for VNC- remote controlling your BlackBerry device using your car’s display- a Jaguar in this example.

Basically, your BlackBerry runs the VNC server and connects through USB to the Jaguar in the video below. Audio is routed through Bluetooth. Once the BlackBerry is connected, you can control many aspects of it using the touch screen on your Jaguar. At the moment, some functions are intentionally disabled for safety reasons but the guys demo’ing said that app developers can contact them to allow VNC access to their apps.

As you can from the video above, the technology is certainly very cool and allows you to use a familiar interface (your BlackBerry in this case) to navigate things like maps, media, contacts and phone functionality- which could be a tad bit confusing on some cars. The Jaguar models for next year will come equipped with this.

I thought it meant an atari jaguar and I thought to myself, wow- all three people who still own one of those and have a blackberry have a pretty cool niche product.
