ASUS officially announces the Padfone

It’s a tablet…it’s a smartphone…no- it’s a Padfone.

Possibly one of the worst names I’ve heard for a product (iPad included), ASUS officially took the wraps off “Padfone” at Computex this morning. The Padfone is basically an Android based dock+smartphone combo that can be utilized as a standalone Smartphone or as a tablet when the Smartphone is docked into it. The docking procedure reminds me of how you used to put tapes in tape recorders.

The tablet part of Padfone seems somewhat similar to the dock that ASUS bundles with the Transformer- it’s dumb device on it own but slide the Smartphone and it comes alive providing a larger screen, more battery and speakers. The Padfone is expected to be available later this year, but so far, ASUS is not disclosing any specs or the OS it will come equipped with. Considering that Ice Cream Sandwich is also launching around that time, one can speculate. Engadget has a hands-on video which is embedded below. Scary dude.

We’ll post the official press release with more details once we get one.
