Another year, another cable cut.

Experiencing slow speeds on your du Internet line? Don’t worry, they are not throttling it again, it’s just the yearly cable cut saying hello. du has confirmed to Gulfnews that the provider is experiencing disruption in its services across the region following a submarine cable cut on March 23.

“du would like to assure its customers that it has taken immediate action to ease the situation by re-routing its traffic over other available links,” the statement said.

“However, customers will continue to face bandwidth degradation and longer connection times. Performance is expected to go back to more normal levels within the coming few days, according to the cable operators.

“Although the incident is not under its control, du is working with the concerned parties to ensure a quick resolution of this issue.

“du apologises for any inconvenience caused and is committed to provide further updates and actions being taken to restore capacity performance to the normal levels.”

On an 8mbps Internet connection, colleague Taimoor Hafeez is reporting a speed drop to 400kbps from the usual 940kbps on regular downloads. However, it seems the problem has not affected Etisalat customers, with speeds staying pretty much normal on an 8mbps eLife connection at my home.

If you are on an Etisalat line and are experiencing slow speeds, please use the comment section below to inform us.

For Mobile Broadband, I can’t get more than 10 kbps in my iPhone.

Ouch! Let’s hope that those “few days” are not months!

I honestly hope this re-routing business doesn’t affect my latency too badly. Was actually enjoying my online gaming experience until this happened. Fingers crossed that it gets better, rather than worse!

    im on 24mbps – i usually get 3+ megabytes per second…now i cant get over 600kbps..

I am also on 24mbps and when I do a speed test I get less than 300kb per sec download time when I usually used to get up to 6mb per sec. If it is a cable, how come Etisalat hasn’t been affected? It smells fishy to me, maybe they are cutting down on costs!!

Doubt it. The news of this cable cut is all over the internet.

Would have been nice if Du sent an email to all it’s client to inform of this instead of waiting 2-3 days to read this on news sites… Customer service and information people…!
