More details on ‘Xperia Play’ to come in an official event next week.

Sony finally ended months of speculation by officially unveiling the Playstation Phone, dubbed Xperia Play, during the Super Bowl XLV yesterday. The Xperia Play smartphone is now confirmed to run on the Android OS, and will target gamers with a Playstation Store collaboration. Check out the commercial below.

As you can see, the advertisement revealed not a lot except that androids have creepy thumbs. However, Sony has promised an official event on February 13, 2011 at 18:00 GMT (10pm UAE time), according to Sony Ericsson’s official Facebook page. If you ‘like’ the page, you can access a link that invites you to an ‘Android is ready to play’ event page, giving you exact dates and times you can be on Facebook for the latest updates.

The big news finally arrives. This is certainly exciting times for a gamer, what with the Nintendo 3DS, NGP and now the Xperia Play vying for our attention. For Sony, again as with NGP, it now boils down to the pricing. They seem to have the hardware and the software to back up their device, but the pricing will be vital for device’s initial survival. Let’s hope it’s not the PS3 all over again.
