Hitachi’s new IPS display render’s iPhone’s Retina Display old school.

Apple made a big deal about their Retina Display but it seems that it wouldn’t even last a year in this world of insanely fast moving technology developments.

Hitachi has come out with a 4.5 inch IPS display which manages to crap an incredible 1280×720 pixels into. This results in a mind boggling pixel density of 329dpi. Just to put this into context the pixel density of the HTC Desire is 252dpi while the pixel density of the iPhone 4 is 326dpi.

And if you thought that it was just a matter of cramming more pixels onto the display, think again. The display also has a contrast of 1,100:1 and a brightness of 500 nits from an LED backlight. This display is set to go into production by October 2012 which means that though MWC 2011 is just tomorrow CES 2012 will be chock full of crazy displays.

Sorry but 3 more pixels per inch isn’t that mind boggling

Well that plus the fact that they managed to do it with a contrast ration of 1,100: 1 (As opposed to the iPhone 4′s 800:1) and a brightness of 500 nits. All round, the better display.

The other point is that the resolution is spread over a larger and more usable screen.
