Jailbreak released for the latest iOS version
The Jailbreaking community and Apple have been involved in a cat and mouse game ever since the original iPhone was released. Apple tries to keep its platform closed and controlled which doesn’t allow access to certain functionalities that the iPhone is very much capable of and the Jealbreaking community tries to exploit every iOS update that Apple patches.
Currently, iOS devices are running on OS 4.2.1 and until this weekend, there was no untethered Jailbreak option available for Apple’s latest update. There was a tethered Jailbreak available but what that meant was that your iPhone would need to be connected to a computer every time you rebooted it- not the ideal thing for a portable device.
This weekend saw the release of greenpois0n which allows you to Jailbreak your iPhone untethered. Available for both Windows and Mac, I decided to see how well it works using my iMac and iPhone 4. The download is small at around 4MB and it requires your iPhone to be in DFU mode to work its magic. Its all quite simple if you follow the instructions which basically require you to press and hold either the power or the home button or both for a few seconds.
Once the device enters DFU mode, greenpois0n patches it up which roughly took a minute or so with tons of text scrolling on your iPhone. After that, the Apple logo gets replaced by a skull and you know you’re all set when you see an icon for Loader on your iPhone. Through the Loader you can install Cydia which acts as a repository for Jailbroken apps.
Installing Cydia was probably the most frustrating part as you have to launch the “loader” which connects to greenpois0n’s servers and from there on download Cydia. My guess is that the greenpois0n server was getting hammered with tons of requests and thus, it took me almost twenty tries to successfully install Cydia. Once that was done, it was all smooth sailing.
So right now, I can enjoy my favorite app Lock Screen on the iPhone until Apple decides to release the next update to iOS which, from the rumors, could be as early as next week. Hopefully, there won’t be as long of a wait to get the Jailbreak for that version.
