Latitude portion of the application has a new update which will enable users to check-in at their current locations much like Foursquare or Gowalla.

Check in

Ever felt that there were not enough ways to tell eager stalkers exactly where you were? Well Google seems to have understood your plight.

Just introduced in the latest version of Google Maps (v. 5.1) is the check in feature. Added to the latitude section of the app, this new feature will be similar to the existing check in systems found on the likes of Foursquare and Gowalla except that it will also feature a ‘check-out’ feature, thus increasing the location awareness experience.

Advantages, of course, are that though the automated check in system is pretty cool, it does not, as of now, offer any deals or badges. This may, of course, change once Google launches its Google deals scheme but will it be enough to convince people to abandon their already comfy foursquare couches to the corporate bench of google? Only time will tell.
