Shoot on the go with minoHD.

Good: Better quality than Smartphones, good in low light and decent optical stabilization.
Bad: Unless you shoot a lot of casual videos, there is no need for such a device.
Price: AED 899 for 8GB (as reviewed), 699 for 4GB

Video quality on the Flip minoHD is decent- its not professional grade but good enough for casual videos, which in all fairness, is the target for this device. It has the capability of recording at 1280×800 resolution which is 720p at 60 frames per second with a bitrate of 8.8 Mbps. The files are saved with H.264 video compression and AAC audio compression in MP4 files format.

The following three videos are basically raw footage from the camera without any edits to show you the quality. The first one was shot outdoors during night time in Las Vegas, while the second one is in a dark room presentation of the BlackBerry Playbook. The last one is from the Abu Dhabi motor show, indoors and during the day time.

Along with the Flip you also get the FlipShare application that installs on your Windows or Mac and lets your organize and download videos from the Flip MinoHD to your computer. You can also directly email or upload to YouTube from the application for a quick action as well as create movies by stitching videos together and adding credits to them. It’s not exactly Adobe Premiere but lets you do basic stuff.

The biggest question that one asks is if there is any point in a dedicated video camera when you have devices like the iPhone and Nokia N8 that have pretty decent cameras. Its tricky to answer that, as there are a few things that Flip minoHD offers such as optical stabilization and instant recording along with good battery life and better picture quality. Those things become important if you shoot videos frequently but if you’re more like the person who might use their video camera once in a month, then there is no justification for a dedicated camera. But that is not the crowd that Flip is targeting.

The Flip minoHD as reviewed (8GB model) is priced at AED 899and offers two hours worth of recording. You can pick the cheaper 4GB version that offers 1 hour of recording for AED 699.
