Gesture-based multitasking to take over.
According to sources close to BGR, the next iPad and iPhone may not feature a home button.
Apple is looking to get rid of the home button entirely on all iDevices, and instead will replace it with gesture-based multitasking which has been introduced in the latest iOS 4.3 button. With gestures, users will be able simply pinch the device with 5 fingers to go back to the home screen, swipe left or right with 4 fingers to switch between apps, and swipe up with 4 fingers to bring up the multitask bar.
While they may seem like a sleek implementation, experience with gestures in iPhone browsers like Atomic Browser or Mercury browser has thought me that they may not work entirely well, and may cause ‘false intentions’. Also, using gestures is also cumbersome when you are limited in space, or are holding the device awkwardly.
BGR also claims Apple’s photo-taking application, Photo Booth, will be appear in the next version of iPad, along with the iLife apps for iOS.
