Microsoft re-enables boot-to-disc on Xbox 360

New update also brings wrath for modders.

According to Major Nelson, Microsoft will roll out a new update for the Xbox 360 on Jan 20, 2011. The update will re-enable the ‘boot to disc’ feature on the console, addressing numerous requests from users for some time. The feature was removed to stop modders from flashing their drives. Not that it helped.

Boot to disc allows you to load a media, movie or a game, immediately when the console boots up. It’s the ultimate tool for lazy gamers who only play one game all the time – you will never have to remove the disc from the tray.

The update also brings improved piracy measures, and as such has been dubbed as ‘anti-piracy update 2.5′ by modders. Though the technical details are sparse, the update seems to be doing its work. Modders all over the Internet are confirming that they can no longer log into Xbox Live and have been banned.

The update is mandatory.
