Users will be able to retain their existing number when moving between telecoms.

UAE Telecommunications and Regulatory Authority (TRA) has confirmed to Reuters that both the incumbent telecoms in the country, Etisalat and Du, will offer mobile number portability by this March end.

The service will enable users to retain their existing number when moving between the two telecoms, which the TRA hopes will stimulate competition.

“It will stimulate competition between the two operators because operators will try to hold onto their customers,” Mohamed Al Ghanim, director general of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, told reporters at a conference in Abu Dhabi.

Ghanim also said that there is no possibility of a third telecom operator in the region, saying “the market cannot take it.”

I am sure most of us would disagree on that one.
