MIT student builds Minority Report-like interface with Kinect

We knew this would happen sooner than later.

The first thing that pops in my mind whenever someone mentions Kinect is ‘Minority Report’, and with the numerous hacks that have been possible on the motion-camera, it wasn’t much time before someone tried to re-create the Minority Report-like interface with it.

A group of students at MIT has coded up a hand detection software that is able to distinguish fingers within a cloud of 60,000 points and at a rate o 30 FPS per second. In a two-min video, the students demonstrated a basic version of the interface where they were able to sort through an image gallery by moving their hand in a circular motion. The user was able to grab an image, and bring it to the forefront, where he could zoom or rotate at will. The system was able to identify each finger as a white dot and the palm as a pink spot.

Now it only needs further fine tuning – probably years in the making – and a snazy interface and then we could finally look as cool as Tom Cruise did!
