Creative introduced five new additions to their Wireless Entertainment family at a press event in Dubai today. On the speaker side, we saw the new ZiiSound T6 speaker system as well as the WP-300 headphones, both of which are Bluetooth based. More interesting to us were the three Android tablets- the Zen Touch 2 and the new ZiiO 7″ and 10″ tablets.
The ZiiO tablets are based on Creative’s Zii Processor and run v2.1 of Android. Creative said that an upgrade to 2.2 Froyo is expected within Q1 of next year. Both these tablets have 8GB storage built-in along with a MicroSD car on the 7″ and an SD card slot on the 10″ version. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also included on both models, however 3G isn’t but through Bluetooth you should be able to tether with your Mobile phone. A front facing VGA camera is also included on both the models align with HDMI connectivity to transmit 720p video and 1080i video to your TV with the 7″ and 10″ devices respectively.
What separates the ZiiO from other upcoming tablets are two things- first of which is the audio quality because of Creative’s X-Fi based technology. If you are an audiophile, we are willing to bet that the ZiiO will be the best sound producing tablet. Secondly and more importantly, is the screen technology in these tablets- Creative chose resistive screens instead of capitative screens found on other tablets like the iPad and Galaxy Tab. The reason, as given by Andy Ho, the Sales Manager for Asia is that Creative very much wanted to have ZiiO the capability of being used as a device that you could use a pen with and capacitive screens don’t allow that. The screen on the 7″ has a resolution of 800×480 with 16.8 million colors while the 10″ model has a resolution of 1024×600 with 262,000 colors.
Pricing for the 7″ model is AED 1199 (US$325) and AED 1499 (US$410.) The following videos show both the 7″ and 10″ versions of ZiiO
Last, but certainly not the least was the Zen Touch 2 PMP or Wireless Entertainment Device as Creative categorizes it. The ZEN Touch 2 features a Cortex based CPU and a 3.2″ touch screen with Android 2.1 running on it. Again, this will be upgradeable to Froyo 2.2. The Touch 2 also features Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 and a MicroSD card slot for expansion. Also included is a 2-MegaPixel camera and an accelerometer. Again, we had someone from Creative give us a little demo on the unit.
We have asked Creative for review samples and should be bringing you a detailed look at these devices soon.
