A phone you can easily fall in love with.
The Nokia X3-02 is based on the the Symbian Series 40 6th edition which adds touch support to the aging platform. Although the screen is resistive instead of capacitive, its very finger friendly. It takes a bit getting used to differentiating between scrolling and selecting but works well once you get the hang of it.
The home screen shows you date and time, favorite contacts, your latest email and four shortcuts to your applications. At the bottom of the screen you have three buttons that used to correspond to the soft and center keys on older Series 40 handsets but now you simply tap on them.
The Nokia X3-02 has one one of the best keys I’ve used in a Mobile phone. They are big in size, soft to touch and easy to press- you’ll have a hard time not loving the keypad. The dedicated music and messaging keys are a nice addition to quickly access these two features. The only complain I have is the unusual configuration of moving the *, # and 0 keys to the right which is what stops the keypad from being perfect.
Usability wise, the X3-02 takes you back to the days before smartphones got so popular and I say that as a good thing. It is extremely easy and intuitive to use- my mom can pick this phone and start taking right away. There is not much lag as far as performance is concerned and you can scroll through lists and menus quickly.
The camera is 5.0 Megapixels but, expectedly, the results are purely average. You might be able to capture a good snap in broad daylight but the lack of flash will make it hard to capture any quality in low light or during night time. Videos are also supported with VGA resolution capture at 15fps. While photos and videos aren’t that great, music playback is pretty amazing. The speakers on the Nokia X3-02 are pretty loud and with up to 32GB expansion capabilities, you can fill it up with music.
Wrapping it up, battery life on the X3-02 is also pretty impressive. While my usage varied between light to moderate, I was able to get four days on a single charge. This included the occasional call, download emails using Wifi as well as music playback on the device.
Priced at AED 650, the Nokia X3-02 is hard not to love. It looks great, is extremely functional and merges touch and type beautifully. If you are not looking for a Smartphone, then you’d be hard-pressed finding something better at this price.
