Bump – iPhone 4 App of the Week

Taking fist bumps to a whole new level.

So there you are, sitting in a café with some friends. Somebody there has a very cool picture you’d like to have as wallpaper for your own iPhone 4. You get it emailed? Nah, get it Bumped!

Bump is an extremely simple iOS4 app that allows you to share Photos, Contacts, Calendar events, Social Networking connections and Music streaming. All you have to do is select the file (in case of photos and songs) from your library and then fist bump your friend (who’s also holding an iOS4 device running Bump). Once your fists have bumped (I strongly suggest NOT to do this with an iPad), your iOS4 device will ask both of you to connect with each other. Click “Yes” and the file will be transferred and stored into your library. That’s literally it!

It’s the same for Contacts and Calendar entries, just select the one you want to share and then Bump. After confirmation, the contact or calendar entry is saved on your iPhone 4. Now Music files are a little different from Photos, Contacts & Calendars, in that you’re not exactly sharing a music file with your friends; that would be illegal. So what happens is that once you select a song and get it Bumped, the person receiving it will only be able to stream it on YouTube or listen to the preview on iTunes.

Social Networks work in an interesting way as well. Basically you have the option to choose from Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter (once you sign into each service) to add friends, follow people and find mutual friends. All of this is done seamlessly without any headaches.

How this works is that once you Bump, the GPS and gyroscope and accelerometer track your phone and then allow you to transfer the data over WiFi or 3G/Edge. Of course, all of this happens in the background and all you see is the magical act of fist bumping and sharing data with your friends. It’s simple, effective, and best of all it’s free, making Bump our iPhone 4 App of the Week.
