Kaspersky: Middle East online bankers favorite among hackers

Press release:
The Middle East’s online banking users are between the most sought after targets for cybercriminals as it has emerged that Egypt, Saudi Arabia Turkey, Morocco, Iran and Kuwait were among the world’s markets worst hit by a version of ZeuS, a highly specialized online banking Trojan, according to Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions.

During a five-month study completed in June 2010, Kaspersky Lab analysts tracked an online crime gang using a version of the Zeus Trojan and developed a geographic pattern of its attacks as well as a profitability evolution. The results are alarming for the Middle East region.

The worst hit market internationally was Egypt which recorded approximately 7,500 infections, the world’s highest rate, with Mexico being second with more than 5,000 victims. Saudi Arabia was third with just under 5,000 infected users. Turkey was fourth in the list with each of Morocco, Iran and Kuwait also hovering near the 2,000 mark.

“One needs to put this into context in order to understand how critical is the situation becoming for the Middle East region,” said David Emm, Kaspersky Lab’s Senior Regional Researcher, Global Research and Analysis Team, speaking at the E-Crime Congress in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

“The same gang targeted markets such as the USA causing just about half the infections it caused in Egypt, despite having a much broader potential playing field due to America’s much higher Internet penetration footprint.

“The gang’s attacks worked by intercepting and then redirecting funds of the hard earned money of their unsuspecting victims, either directly from online banking accounts or by the means of stolen credit card numbers. Cybercrime is becoming very appealing because of its potential rewards and also because it is easy to do and has a lower associated risk compared to other types of crime,” said Emm.

“Since the first ZeuS Trojan appeared in 2006, over 40,000 versions of this Trojan have been recorded. It is a very cost-effective and efficient means of illegally collecting banking information. Once a system is compromised, the gangs can command and control the laptop or PC, steal any relevant data stored in them and transfer it in a ‘dropzone’ from where it can be collected by the cybercriminal.”

Prevention is the key to a safer internet experience according to Tarek Kuzbari, Managing Director, Kaspersky Lab, Middle East.

“People need to deploy enhanced online banking security measures. Users of online banking services must keep their login information private at all times. An up to date operating system, complemented with a security solution which includes an anti virus, antispyware, firewall and vulnerability scanner are essential in mitigating and successfully defending cyber attacks,” he said.

“The problem in the Middle East is compounded due to low consumer awareness of the risks associated with online security and this is something cybercriminals take advantage of. Governments across the region also need to step up their online crime deterrent measures by adopting, adjusting and implementing best international practices which have proven to provide adequate defence mechanisms against cyber attacks.

News Corporation, current owners of the once popular social networking site MySpace, has told The Sydney Morning Herald that the company is looking to sell of the increasingly failing website.

Chase Carey, COO of News Corp said that a sale or partnership are some of the options the company would consider for the in relation to the site.
Earlier in the month, Carey said he expected MySpace to stabilize and achieve a profit within quarters of the year.

“We think it can be a really interesting business. It has some real assets,” Carey said on Monday during Reuters Global Media Summit.

MySpace was recently re-launched with a design overhaul focusing more as a user entertainment portal than being a direct competitor to Facebook.

“We have really overhauled the product and made it a very different experience and I think they did a very good job,” Carey said.
News Corp had had acquired MySpace in 2005 for $580 million, not so long before Facebook came on the block. The rest is history, they say.

With features such as 20-key simultaneous anti-ghosting as well as up to 100 programmable, on-board macros, this keyboard is clearly for the hardest of hardcore gamers. ASUS EAH6870 Review

As the floodgates opened up for the AMD HD 6870 graphics card, ASUS also followed the market with the introduction of the EAH6870. Being ASUS, this card was not going to be released with just the reference settings, so while it looks the same as a factory AMD card, the EAH6870 in fact has two little surprises in store for us. The first is the full aluminum cover on the front of the card which dissipates heat much more efficiently than the reference card, and the EAH6870 comes with a miniscule overclock of 15MHz showing a Core Clock speed of 915MHz.

Aside from looking a little flashy, the ASUS EAH6870 looks pretty much like the rest of its counterparts, that is to say pretty boring. The card supports the standard HD 6870 features, such as HD3D (AMD’s stereoscopic 3D lingo), Eyefinity with support for up to 4 monitors with 2x DVI, HDMI and 2x DisplayPorts. Coupled with the packaging are 1x CrossFire cable and 1x Molex to PCIe power cable along with the drivers and utility CD.

Robobuilders at Dubai World Game Expo

One of the most interesting things at the commencing Dubai World Game Expo, other than the dozens of excellent video games by upcoming regional companies, was robots. Robots from Robobuilders specifically, a DIY kit to educate and amuse robot enthusiasts.

Building the robot is simple, or look like it is, where a user is required to “simply plug together block-type robotic actuator modules’ to have the device up and running. Even if words like “actuator” and “modules”, and them in combine, may have gone over our heads, thankfully, the robots do not require special computer language skills to operate: “without programming, users can download robotic motion files from the Internet and play them on the Robobuilders platforms.”

Getting  a little technical, the RoboBuilder robots have full-duplex dropdown UART serial communication, 16 degree of freedom wCK Robotic Module, remote control, acceleration sensor, bluetooth communication, speaker system and sound detection hardware, as well.

In our demonstration, videos embedded below, we saw the robots doing a jig at a song with dance steps that would take me over a million years to perform. The robots, via modified PS3-controllers, could also be programed to play football, or well, duel with each other if you will.

Robobuilders cost $900, but the kind folks at the DWGE booth offered us media folks a $100 discount, and one even offered me to exchange it for my iPhone 4. Should have taken that up on hindsight!

3DMark 11 delayed by a “few days”

Jarmo Kokko, senior editor at YouGamers, a PC gaming portal owned by FutureMark announced on the site’s forums that the much awaited graphic benchmark tool 3DMark 11 has been delayed indefinitely. The software was due to release today, November 30, 2010.

“Our aim is that 3DMark 11 should provide accurate, reliable and consistent results from the start. With that goal in mind we are taking some extra time now to fix a couple of difficult bugs rather than patch the benchmark immediately after launch.” Kokko said.

“It might take a day, it might be a week, but either way we’ll confirm the new launch date as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

On a personal note, Kokko added that the company is ensuring that the delay is not more than a couple of days, though they won’t announce a date till they are cent percent sure.

Well, there goes our evening of gawking at benchmarks.
