RIM files for new trademark in Canada

The Blackberry tablet could possibly have a new name.

A new trademark application found at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office from RIM has once again sparked rumors of the still secretly veiled Blackberry-based tablet.

The application registers a name called ‘SurfBook’ and could possibly be the new name for the tablet which was initially dubbed as BlackPad. The application filing happened in August, so it is pretty recent. If that proves to be the final name for the tablet, RIM should seriously consider outsourced branding services because the internal one is certainly not doing a good job.

However, there is also a possibility that RIM intends to use the name for an entirely different product; maybe notebooks because you know…it’s called ‘SurfBook‘. If that stands true, this suggests that RIM is looking to extend its reach beyond tablet-PCs, but of course this is pure speculation as nothing is certain.

The Blackberry tablet is rumored to be released in the next few months and will be based on a QNX-platform.
