Panasonic SC-HC30 iPod Dock Review

Looking for a good looking and good sounding iPod dock?

We recently reviewed the Panasonic SC-SP100 iPod dock and weren’t impressed much by it. The person we deal with for Panasonic products promised me that I will like the next one they send and in came the Panasonic SC-HC30 a few days later. I must say that they were not kidding as this one is certainly one of the better looking and sounding iPod docks that we have looked at.

Instead of the usual desktop based docks that we have reviewed, the Panasonic SC-HC30 is equally comfortable on your desk as it is mounted on the wall. In fact, we think this is a unit that will look better on the wall because of sleek and wide looks. Between the two speakers sits a sliding glass door that, with a press of buttons, can go either left or right depending on whether you want to access your iPod or your CD.

Above to where your iPod sits is an LCD display that shows you information such as volume, settings etc. but not the track info. It would have been nice if Panasonic had included a display capable of showing track info from your iPod or your CD. On top of the unit is where all the buttons reside for controlling the unit such as skipping between tracks, changing volume and selecting between the iPod, AM/FM and the CD player which plays MP3 recorded CDs. Other than that, you can connect any other player through AUX input or mute the speakers by connecting a headphone from the back of the unit which could become a bit tedious if the unit is stuck on a wall.

The sound quality on the Panasonic SC-HC30 is pretty darn good. Its one of the very few sound systems that sounds equally good at lower and higher volumes with barely any distortion- even at the loudest levels. While the highest volume levels are decent, they wont make your neighbours complain. Its good enough to fill a medium sized room but not more than that. Bass level is also better than most docks we’ve tested but not enough to throw things off the shelves.

Priced at AED 649 (US$ 175) the Panasonic SC-HC30 is decently priced for an iPod dock with an added functionality of a CD MP3 player. As we stated at the start of the review, it sounds good and would look and fit well in any medium sized room.
