Apple will offer free cases to every owner of its iPhone 4.
Apple announced that it will offer free cases to every iPhone 4 owner. This offer was unveiled at the July 16th Apple conference with a visibly annoyed Steve Jobs taking stage.
The case along with the iOS 4.0.1 update which is now available to download, will hopefully help overcome the widely reported issue of the ‘death grip’ which would cause the phone to loose signal strength if held in a certain way.
To get their free case, owners will be able to apply via the Apple website from July 22nd (website to go live shortly). Those who have already purchased an official Apple mobile case for the iPhone 4 will get a full refund. The offer will last until September 30th.
Another software update to address the proximity sensor bug would be released “soon”.
Declaring “we’re not perfect”, Jobs then demonstrated the ‘death grip’ on a Blackberry 9700, Samsung Omnia 2, and HTC Droid Eris. Jobs said that the signal drop issue was not a “unique” problem to the iPhone 4, adding that the issue was so “blown out of proportion, it’s incredible”.
Jobs also dropped in a few stats: the return rate on the iPhone 3GS at AT&T stores was 6%, for iPhone 4 is 1.7% (explain that!); Apple has sold over 3 million iPhone 4 since launch; 0.55% of all iPhone 4 owners have called in to AppleCare to complain; he does not use a bumper on his iPhone 4.
Jobs also added that the white iPhone 4 will be out sometime later this month.
