We take a look at iOS 4 on an iPhone 3GS and show you some of its new features.

The latest iPhone OS has been re-branded to iOS which makes sense considering that it powers the iPhone, the iPod Touch and the iPad. Tomorrow, the latest version 4 of iOS is going to be available for everyone to upgrade their iPhone 3G/3Gs with. If you have an iPhone 3GS, you will certainly enjoy the best that this OS has to offer such as Multi-tasking, Folders, a Universal Inbox and 5x digital zoom on the camera.

I managed to get my hands of the Gold Master version of iOS 4 and installed it on my 32GB iPhone 3GS. My 3GS was jail-broken (mainly because of Lock Info), however, that didn’t come in the way of my upgrade. You will need iTunes 9.2 to install the upgrade which is already available for download.

The following video which showcases some of the new features of iOS4.0 including multi-tasking:

As you saw in the video, developers need to upgrade their applications to utilize the multi-tasking features of iOS 4 such as quick switching. At the current stage, all applications simply pause when running in the background.

Other than Multi-tasking, you can see Folders is a great way to organize your applications which is great considering the number of Apps present on the iPhone have grown tremendously. At the moment, you can have twelve applications inside one folder. The camera zoom is more gimmicky than anything else since its a digital zoom, however, one thing I forgot to mention in the video is that your photos are now categorized as albums and places. Clicking on places brings a map with your photos organized based on their location. The following screenshot shows that.

Everyone with an iPhone 3GS should upgrade to iOS4 and anyone with an older device should look at upgrading their iPhone to the sexy new iPhone 4. I will wait for it to be officially released in the UAE to grab one as the data bundles available with iPhone are much better than the usual plans from either Etisalat or du.

Don’t forget using a Bluetooth keyboard. I paired mine with an Apple Bluetooth keyboard and most of the hot button mapped keys work fine: volume up/down/mute, playback controls launch iPod in the background and play/pause/forward/back, brightness controls work, contrast too, I think. The CD eject button lets you toggle between onscreen keyboard and Bluetooth keyboard. This is amazing!
