UAE’s second telcom operator in talks with Skype.

Following Etisalat’s announcement last month to offer Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) services to its business clients, du told TheNational that it will begin its own VOIP services from next month and will extend the service to residential customers as well.

“We will start to develop services that are based on voice over IP for the end user. Whether it is through handset or the Web or different types of devices, these things will happen,” Chief commercial officer Farid Faraidooni told TheNational.

du is currently in talks with Skype about a tie-up where the popular VOIP application would be installed on du’s mobile devices.

This is all is underpinned by TRA’s March announcement to allow local telcom operators to provide VOIP services, although international companies are still not allowed to operate separately.
