Makers can no longer copy Apple’s popular designs.
Here is another reason for Steve Jobs to smile after the successful launch of the iPad. US Patent and Trademark Office has finally granted Apple a patent for the iPhone and iPod Touch design as “the ornamental design of an electronic device”. What this means is that any maker that tries to copy any of the two device’s design will hear the loud thud of a big fat law suit that Apple just slammed against their front door.
From what you can read of the patent, Apple had filed the requests in 2009 (iPhone) and 2007 (iPod Touch), and they have been accepted today. Steve Jobs and Jonathan Ive are listed among the 14 inventors of the design.
