Quality earphones for the style conscious.
Beats By Dr. Dre Tour is Monster’s new in-ear headphones, priced at approximately Dhs606. Perfected by hip-hop legend Dr. Dre and distributed by Monster, these in-ear headphones are targeted at music aficionados who want better sound quality are not hesitant to pay the extra price for better performance.
Like the rest of the Beats by Dr. Dre range, the first thing that strikes you about these earphones is the design and packaging. Both the packaging and the design are adorned with black and red – very sleek. As you remove the black sleeve from the packaging, you’re left with a red box, which houses the headphones and a smaller travel case. Also present in the box are extra earbud covers.
The earphones themselves consist of a sleek black and silver earpiece and rather stylish red cables that have a rubber-like finish. Now, the thing about style is that it’s quite subjective. If you wear a pair of torn jeans some people will think its cutting edge fashion while others will think you’ve been mauled by a dog. Beats by Dre Tour faces a somewhat similar predicament. The offbeat red rubber-like wires of the Tour are incredibly fashion-forward but might leave traditionalists begging to differ. The cables are incredibly durable though, which is not surprising considering Monster’s pedigree.

Unlike the Creative Aurvana Air that we reviewed earlier which gently rests on your ears, the Tour penetrates the ear canals and the earpiece is about half an inch in length. Half an inch is a lot to shove down one’s year and as such it feels uncomfortable. What further disappoints is that even then the earphones have a tendency to fall off. We were left constantly trying to adjust the earphones so that they stay in the ear.
When it comes down to sound quality, Monster’s Beats by Dr. Dre Tour shines. Hip Hope, electronic and pop music sound great on the Tour. It also has a surprising amount of base, which is quite unique for an earphone. We didn’t quite like how classical music sounds on the earphones. The earphones noise cancelling abilities aren’t very impressive. Yes, they do a great job at high volumes but at lower volumes you can hear everything around you. For a device that’s jammed right into our ear canals, that’s disappointing.
Overall, Monsters Beats By Dr. Dre Tour are a great pair of in-ear headphones for the style-conscious who want superior quality sound and aren’t afraid to shell out a few extra hundred dirhams for it.
