The Geekfest is happening at Shelter this upcoming Wednesday. What is that you ask? why, its a gathering of geeks. Or is it? Here is “the official” blurb on it- “The Shelter in Al Quoz opens its doors to bloggers, Twitterers, FriendFeeders and Facebookers, MySpacers, Adioboohoos, YouTubers and all sorts of other goobers – it’s [...]

The Geekfest is happening at Shelter this upcoming Wednesday. What is that you ask? why, its a gathering of geeks. Or is it? Here is “the official” blurb on it-

“The Shelter in Al Quoz opens its doors to bloggers, Twitterers, FriendFeeders and Facebookers, MySpacers, Adioboohoos, YouTubers and all sorts of other goobers – it’s GeekFest, a platform-independent open source get-together for anyone with an interest in online communities!”

As correctly pointed out by one of our forum members “Blojib”, the event seems to be a bit mislabeled. Just have a look at people that use Facebook around you. These are guys that drive Porsches and Janes that sip coffee at Mall of the Emirates. It certainly takes a lot more to be a geek than to simply have a twitter account.

So with that, I present my top 5 list of things that are Ubergeek

1) Have your car plate number as 404

2) Give your IP address instead of email

3) Read 1337 At Normal Speed

4) Play Retro Games without Retro Consoles

5) Carry your O/S on a Thumbdrive

I’d be more than happy to meet even three people at Geekfest who can repeat my list in reverse order or arrange it in HEX. A better name for this “Geekfest” event could’ve been an “An Offline Gathering for the Online Social Networkers” or OGOSN.

Yeah- I am openly geek.

That’s funny Abbas. To be honest I didn’t think that “geek” was the right label for this event either but they can it whatever they like I guess. I still have not decided whether I’ll go but I’m leaning towards no… ;-)

I agree Magnus. I was thrilled when I initially heard about it but its becoming more, dare I say, “Popular” by the day which pretty much goes against anything Geek.

The whole name GeekFest was totally, utterly and joyously tongue in cheek.

If you want to come to the event, you’re welcome. If you want to stay away, you’re welcome.

We don’t care if you do or don’t. And that makes us a way more geeky than you are, to be honest…

alex: Geeks care! We are super passionate about meeting other geeks and exchanging greets. But Geekfest with its celebrity DJs, Social Media Experts etc. etc. makes it a bit ungeeky and daunting for the rest of us.

How about calling it a SMUG (Social Media Users’ Group) meeting :)

Isn’t it funny how people react just to a word in a name (both sides really). I didn’t go, not because I didn’t feel it was geeky enough but I just didn’t have time. So I guess I shouldn’t comment on whether it was geeky or not. But from the description of the event and accounts of people who went I still don’t feel it’s in line what my view of what geeky is but that view may not be in line with what others think.

would a podcaster balance things on the next event? *points at himself*

the problem is people take the term “geek” as derogatory when it isn’t
