Apple’s OS X has certainly been envied for its looks by users of other Operating Systems. This is clearly visible by the sheer number of themes, hacks and modifications to make <insert your favorite OS here> look like OS X. With Windows’ upcoming version 7, Microsoft itself is taking some design cues from OS X which isn’t a bad thing at all.

If you have switched from the public beta to the recently released public RC of 7, one thing you’ll notice right away is that Microsoft has, for the better, removed the striking colors of Windows of the past with a much more mellow and soothing combinations. Here is a screenshot comparing the beta on the left and RC version of Windows 7 on the right.

Another design cue that Windows 7 takes from OS X is in the notification area. Apple always uses monochrome icons and we see Microsoft adopting this technique as well. Gone are the days of multi-color icons in Windows, replaced by all white icons in the notification area with an occasional dab or color.

The new Superbar has also been the subject of quite a few debates with its slightly larger icons that somewhat resemble the dock. That may be the case but I feel that Microsoft has one-upped Apple and the Superbar is definitely much better than OS X’s dock. With its jump lists and Aero Peek functionality, it allows you to do so much more than Dock or the Start Bar of yesteryears.

I Agree… I’m a dual user and with the release of Window 7 RC 1 you can clearly see the difference in the theme compared to the Beta & the total failure Windows Vista
