HP HDX 16 Notebook

May 17, 2009 by

The HP HDX 16 that we’re looking at today is a not exactly something standard. Unlike most notebooks that offer either 15.x or 17.x inch screens, the HDX 16, as the name suggests, offers a 16″ screen. Obviously that makes it a bit bigger than your 15.x” notebook to carry around and a bit smaller than your 17.x” notebook used as a desktop replacement. Where does this leave the HDX 16? Lets find out.

hdx16_pack2

The packaging on the HDX 16 is pretty much ordinary- a black colored box that houses the notebook and all the extras that come with it such as the charger and the quick-start guides. No CD/DVDs were included in our package because recovery of your notebook can be done through a separate partition of about 12GB on your hard drive. You can easily create recovery CD/DVDs through an application already installed on the notebook which is something I suggest you do right away because I’ve seen hard drives failing out of the blue- not in HP notebooks though ;)

hdx16_thickness

Included in the package are two remote controls- a mini remote that can slide into the notebook’s Express Card slot or a full featured remote with a keypad that works with the Microsoft Media Center application. Also included is what I thought an external heavy-duty Wi-Fi antenna for you to catch your neighbor’s unprotected signal which actually turned out to be an antenna for TV signal. An RF Coaxial cable is also present in case you want to connect the Tuner to a wall.
hdx16_remote2
Specifications-wise, the HDX 16 packs quite a punch with Blu-ray drive, 4GB system RAM and an nVidia 9600GT with 512MB powering up the full HD 1920×1080 display. The only thing I was left wondering about was as the P8400 CPU that has a clock rating of 2.26GHz. While not a slow CPU by any standard, its not one you’d expect in a notebook with everything else that so high-end. A better option might have been the T series CPU that has a larger cache along with a clock rating of 2.66GHz or higher.
The HDX 16 is by no means an ultra portable. It measures 14.9 x 10.0 x 1.7 inches and weighs over 3.0kg which means its big and heavy and isnt primarily meant to be carried around with you. Its more of desktop replacement that could be carried with you if need be. The large screen allows HP to have reasonable space for adding a full sized notebook keyboard along with a slightly cramped numeric pad- good enough for casual data entry. Below the numeric keypad lies the finger print sensor- something found in almost all higher end notebooks. I found the keys nice and soft to type on. They didn’t produce much noise either which is a good thing.
Above the keyboard you have a row of touch keys that light up when the notebook is powered on. These buttons include media keys and volume controls that also allow you to adjust the bass/treble. A MediaSmart key is also present that cycles between your movies, music, pictures etc. The Trackpad, which can be disabled with a button right above it is smooth and easy to work with .
hdx16_keyboard2
The left side of the notebook features a wealth of ports such as the VGA and HDMI outputs, the Network, eSATA, USB and Firewire ports as well as the Express Card slot and the Docking station connector. the right side houses the Bluray drive, two more USB ports, the TV antenna and the power connector. The memory card reader and audio jacks are present on the front and a bit recessed so you don’t see them right away.
hdx16_right
The HDX 16 with its full HD resolution, a Bluray drive and Altec Lansing powered stereo speakers along with a dedicated sub-woofer spells a multimedia monster from every angle and the notebook certainly doesn’t disappoint in this area. The screen is gorgeous with its 1920×1080 resolution- some people might find that a bit hard on the eyes but I’m used to my Sony VAIO Z series which as a 1600×900 resolution on a 13.3″ screen so I was right at home with the HP. One thing that you need to be careful about is glare- the glossy screen can certainly be a bit hard to use if you are sitting behind a windows, especially with the brightness turned down a bit.
hdx16_glare
The audio system on the HDX is also the best I’ve heard in a notebook. While I wont place it up there with a decent desktop speaker system by Logitech or Creative, it still manages to pack quite a punch and listening to your music on the HDX 16 doesn’t make you want to run out and grab your earbuds, like I do with most other notebooks.
hdx16_subwoofer
With a kick ass screen and sound system, you can certainly imagine how good full HD Blu-Ray movies look like on the HDX 16. Lets find out how well the notebook performs with our benchmarks.

AMD happy on EU finding Intel Guilty

The European Commission today found Intel guilty of abusing its dominant position in the global x86 microprocessor market, saying that “Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years. Such a serious and sustained violation of the EU’s antitrust rules cannot be tolerated.”  The Commission also stated that “there is evidence that Intel had sought to conceal the conditions associated with its payments.” The EC decision requires Intel to change its business practices immediately and fines Intel a record EUR 1.06 billion (US $1.45 billion).

“Today’s ruling is an important step toward establishing a truly competitive market,” said Dirk Meyer, AMD president and CEO.  “AMD has consistently been a technology innovation leader and we are looking forward to the move from a world in which Intel ruled, to one which is ruled by customers.”

“After an exhaustive investigation, the EU came to one conclusion – Intel broke the law and consumers were hurt,” said Tom McCoy, AMD executive vice president for legal affairs.  “With this ruling, the industry will benefit from an end to Intel’s monopoly-inflated pricing and European consumers will enjoy greater choice, value and innovation.”

The EC decision stated specifically that:
•    “Intel gave wholly or partially hidden rebates to computer manufacturers on condition that they bought all, or almost all, their x86 CPUs from Intel”.
•    “Intel made payments to major retailer Media Saturn Holding from October 2002 to December 2007 on condition that it exclusively sold Intel-based PCs in all countries in which Media Saturn Holding is active.“
•    Intel “interfered directly in the relations between computer manufacturers and AMD. Intel awarded computer manufacturers payments – unrelated to any particular purchases from Intel – on condition that these computer manufacturers postponed or cancelled the launch of specific AMD-based products.”

Intel has so far failed to convince any antitrust enforcement agency that its business practices are lawful and pro-consumer.

In 2008, the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) issued a 26 billion won fine (approximately $25.4 million USD) saying that Intel’s abuse of its dominant position included coercing and paying customers millions of dollars on the condition that they use only Intel chips, delay launches of AMD products, and/or not develop any new products with AMD chips.   The KFTC also found that, “South Korean consumers had to buy PCs at higher prices as domestic PC makers were forced to buy Intel’s pricier CPU.”  In addition to a fine, the KFTC ordered Intel to stop the practice of offering payments to PC makers conditioned upon them not doing business with AMD.  Intel is in the process of appealing the ruling.

In 2005, the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) ruled that Intel had violated the country’s anti-monopoly laws by illegally forcing full or partial exclusivity with five Japanese PC makers.  Intel did not appeal the ruling.

In the United States, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and New York Attorney General’s office are investigating Intel for abuse of its monopoly position.  In 2005, AMD filed private litigation in the US District Court of Delaware, which is scheduled for trial in spring 2010.

Samsung Launches Lap Fit Monitor Series

May 11, 2009 by

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in monitors, launched today its Lap Fit monitor series for laptop computers. The 18.5-inch LD190G and 22-inch LD220 LCD screens create a new market for monitors and are specialised designed for an environment where laptop users utilise dual monitors.

“Demand for laptop computers has substantially increased and, according to IDC, in 2009 the global laptop computer market will overtake the desktop computer market for the first time,” said Madhav Narayan, Head of IT Division at Samsung Gulf Electronics. “However, most laptop computer screens are 15 inches or less. Samsung has introduced this new Lapfit series of monitors in consideration of greater customer needs for a second laptop computer monitor.”

ld190n_01

“The LD190G and LD220 are products based on a new concept that focuses on usability and connectivity to a laptop computer. We will continue to launch distinctive products to offer new values to users and ultimately set new trends in the industry,” added Narayan.

New Monitor Category for Consumers on the Move
A laptop computer user who uses a general monitor as a second monitor will experience substantial visual inconveniences resulting from the difference in the height of the general monitor and the laptop computer with the introduction of Samsung’s Lapfit series monitors.

By attaching the stand, which is usually placed on the bottom of conventional displays, to the back of the display, the Lapfit series allows you to maintain a similar height to a laptop computer. This maximises user convenience by removing any visual inconveniences experienced by the user when viewing the screens or shifting the work window. The angle of the stand can be adjusted, allowing the user to tilt the LCD monitor to the same angle (10-30 degrees) as the laptop computer screen.

The monitor can be easily connected to a laptop computer via USB cable.

In addition, a user can use the ‘Magic Bright’ function to adjust the brightness of the monitor to be similar to that of the laptop computer screen. The wide screen 16:9 LCD display with a high resolution of 1360Ⅹ768 ensures that the user enjoys optimised visual effects for entertainment purposes, such as for movies, television dramas and games.

The Lapfit series includes the Samsung LD220 which is a 22-inch LCD monitor and the 18.5-inch LD190G LCD monitor. The LD220 monitor also includes Samsung’s UbiSync technology that allows up to six monitors to be connected to a PC via USB cable, without a graphics card or complex software installations. This allows more portability for those looking for a larger, richer screen for visual effects on the go.

Filed under Components, CPUs/Memory Modules, Reviews

Today we take a look at two products in one- the new AMD Phenom 810 CPU which introduces AMD to the world of DDR3 and the MSI 790GX-G65 mothebroard, upon which we’ve tested this CPU. The Phenom II X4 8xx series reduces the L3 cache on the Phenom II platform from 6MB to 4MB which will result in a bit of a performance loss, but on the brighter side, it also reduces the TDP from 125W to 95W.

amd810_cpu

The Phenom II X4 810 that we have with us today is a Quad Core 2.6GHz CPU with dedicated L1 and L2 cahces of 4 x 128KB and 4 x 512KB for each core along with a shared L3 cache of 4MB. Using HyperTransport 3.0 that provides  21GB/s memory bandwidth for DDR3, you get 37GB/s of processor-to-system bandwidth. It requires an AM3 socket and DDR3 banks which the MSI motherboard happily provides.
