With the iPhone 3G recently officially launched in the UAE, I thought I’d make a list of ten applications that make my iPhone experience great. Most of these applications are available in one name or another for other Smartphones like the Blackberry as well so if iPhone is not your cup of tea, then feel free to look them up on your favorite Smartphone. The list isn’t necessarily in any order so don’t think that the application at the top is better than the one at the bottom
Newsstand is an RSS reader that I update every morning to catch the latest posts from my favorite websites. Its a great way to be updated with news, technology, entertainment or sports without sitting in front of your PC. Once Dubai Metro kicks off, it would be an ideal companion on your way to work.
With the weather going crazy in Dubai over the last month, I figured it would be nice to know what to expect. This is a beautiful app that is going to be worthless in Summer but hey, for now, it gives me a 5 day forecast.
The Twitter bug seems to be catching up and I’m no exception. Tweetie updates tweets when I launch it and lets me know what my pals are up to. A cool feature is to locate people you are geographically close to- perfect for reverse-stalking.
A brilliant and extremely simple to use photo processing application. What it does is to allow you to selectively turn parts of your pictures/photos into color or grey scale for some wonderful effects. I took a picture of my wife converted it to grey scale and then simply colored her dress back to the original red while she stayed in grey scale.
This is your all-in-one Instant Messaging client that can handle MSN, Yahoo, GoogleTalk etc. The lack of background processes on the iPhone is handled by BeeJive by keeping you connected to their server an hour after you exit the app and sending any messages via email. Good if you have Push Email until iPhone O/S 3.0 comes along.
Not much to say about this extremely popular voice chatting client. Although calls to regular numbers don’t work from the UAE, you can voice chat with your buddies online.
Crosswords are always challenging your brain and this app allows you to download daily crosswords from many different newspapers from around the world. It can save sessions and provide hints to help you a little. Its an excellent little app that you can play when you have a few minutes waiting in line for something as it doesn’t require you to keep your eyes focused on the screen all the time.
This game is an awesome combination of strategy and watching mindless blowing up of soldiers. The enemy approaches from left and your base is on the right. In between you have a field where you position different types of towers with guns, missiles, glue and electricity to slow down and wipe the incoming army. It starts off easily but pretty soon you have commandoes, jeeps and helicopters arriving by the masses. Different terrains also make an interesting twist. Certainly worth checking out.
A free app by Apple that lets you remote control your iTunes. Great to have music running on your desktop and controlling it while lying on your bed.
Tap Tap Revenge: Coldplay
Mindless tapping to Coldplay tunes requires zero brain effort and yet manages to create an extremely fun experience. I’m glad that the iPhone’s screen is as robust as it is.
