AMD recently launched their Athlon64 4000+ and FX55 CPUs. While we had managed to receive the 4000+ at launch, unfortunately, no samples for the FX55 were allocated for the Middle Eastern market at that time. It’s now been about a month since the launch date and we have received samples for the FX55 which is what we’re looking at today.

The CPU is basically the same as the FX-53 except with a higher clock- 2.6GHz which makes it the fastest clocked AMD CPU at the moment. As with all FX CPUs, this one also has 1MB Cache which certainly helps in improving performance. The core is still 130nm although we’ve read that AMD has used strain silicon. We don’t really know much about this technology and thus are not in a position to comment on it at this time but as and when information becomes available, we’ll bring it to ya. Anyways, here’s a CPUID screenshot at stock:

As you can see, the multiplier is set at 13x on the FX55 and like all other FX series of CPUs its totally unlocked so you can move it lower as well as higher. The motherboard used above is slightly underclocked at 199MHz but at 200MHz and 13x, the result is 2.6GHz. (We haven’t used this motherboard for test results- for that, we’ve used our standard MSI nF3-250Gb) Lets take a look at the testbed before we head into the benchmarks

Motherboard: MSI nForce3-250GB
Memory: 2 x 512MB Corsair DDR-400 Memory Module
VGA Card: Leadtek 6800GT
Optical/Hard Drives: ASUS 52X CDRW, Western Digital 10,000RPM 36GB Raptor Serial-ATA
Sound Card: Creative Audigy2
Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP2

For comparison, we’ve chosen the Athlon64 3500+, 4000+ and FX-53 CPUs benched on the same MSI K8N Neo (nForce3-250GB) motherboard as well as the Pentium4 3.4GHz (Prescott)CPU on the Abit AA8 DuraMAX motherboard. Memory timings were set to 2.0-5-2-2 for all CPUs expect for the Pentiun4 which takes DDR2 modules and was set to 3.0-3-3-5. The following applications were tested:

SiSoft Sandra 2003: Memory Bandwidth Benchmarks
PC Mark 04: CPU, Memory, Graphics, Hard Drive Benchmarks
Quake3 Arena: Fastest Setting at 640x480 resolution as well as High Quality Settings at 800x600 Resolution
3D Mark 2001SE: Default settings using the latest build.
Unreal Tournament 2003: Using the built-in benchmarking app in the downloaded demo, we ran the BotMatch & Flyby at 1024x768
Aquamark3: Default Settings
Sysmark 2004: Office Productivity and Internet Content Creation
3D Workstation: SpecView Perf 7.11 at default settings.
