Really digging the dark tone established here and how the young actors are looking mature as ever. I don’t think we need so many character posters for the supporting villains like they gave us here but I guess WB has something in mind.

In just a few days, a whopping ten new posters for the finale of the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise have been released. That’s Warner Bros’ marketing campaign for their surefire moneymaker on overdrive. But no complaining here since all of them look dark and great.

Part 1 begins as Harry, Ron and Hermione set out on their perilous mission to track down and destroy the secret to Voldemort’s immortality and destruction—the Horcruxes. On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart.

Really digging the very dark and gritty tone in this new batch of character posters and it’s an edgy direction for WB to go in with a kids franchise. Then again, I would never be more excited about a movie if it wasn’t for the marketing that plays it off as an epic movie. The stubble here by Potter is something of a delight as well. There’s three other posters from the previous set and look great as well.

There’s no doubt that the most anticipated horror movie of the year is ‘Saw 3D’. Not only is it ending the iconic horror saga for once and for all, it also has an ‘event’ feel to it and is shot in real 3D. That’s a lot of reasons to get excited. The marketing campaign has been pushing the 3-D a whole lot and this poster is one that doesn’t. Have a look.

I like what they are going for here by giving Jigsaw the iconic status among horror villains and possibly in general. He’s certainly become a significant part of our pop culture and having a statue built of Jigsaw is a great way to show it. No reference to the 3-D here aside from the bottom line, which is a step up. Of course, anyone who hasn’t seen a “Saw’ movie won’t have any idea what’s going on here. But then again, why haven’t you?

Movie opens November 9th, 2010 in UAE.

‘Ice Age’ is a very funny animated franchise, despite getting lazy in the later sequels. So when they are up for another similar themed movie, expectations are high. The movie in question is ‘Rio’, which is about talking macaws. The teaser trailer was pretty funny and now we have a poster which is even funnier.

A nerdy macaw from small-town Minnesota takes off on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro.

The movie is still months away for release, but the marketing here is great. The hilarious tagline here coupled with the whacky expression on that macaw’s face makes for a great teaser poster that grabs you. I sense a franchise here if the movie is a success. Got me interested.

Movie releases April 2011.

The marketing is now in full swing for the final installment of the ‘Harry Potter’ saga and after excellent trailers, we now have posters to boot. The following character posters don’t look too different from last year’s ‘Half Blooded Prince’ posters, but match the gritty and dark tone that the series has moved towards.

The background has now changed to the city and the marks on Potter’s face is indicative of the gritty tone of the new movie and sells it perfectly. There’s one thing I don’t like, though. The whole ‘HP7′ business takes me out of the experience. I understand that the brand is way too popular for anyone to not get it, but it still sounds like something people call the movie casually and not something that should be used on the poster. That’s like naming the next Narnia movie ‘The New Narnia Movie’.

But other than that, great posters. Two more below.

Looks like the reshoots business with the upcoming ‘Little Fockers’ had a happy ending. Because if the following poster is an indication, Dustin Hoffman is back in the movie. Also, the studio is playing very safe with the marketing.

The test of wills between Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro) and Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) escalates to new heights of comedy in the third installment of the blockbuster series — Little Fockers. Laura Dern, Jessica Alba and Harvey Keitel join the returning all-star cast for a new chapter of the worldwide hit franchise.

The same white background and small font design has been used this time around too, and the tagline is pretty funny. What doesn’t look so good is the out of place shot of the kids towards the bottom left. If they were going for safe, I think the shot of the whole family standing together would be a better choice. Still, a pleasant poster that isn’t too original.

Movie is opening in December.

Hereafter tells the story of three people who are touched by death in different ways. George (Matt Damon) is a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cecile De France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus, a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might–or must–exist in the hereafter.

There’s too many blank stares here especially with Matt Damon and the whole color pallete and design reminds me of those direct to video supernatural thrillers. I really wish the epic scale of the trailer would have been integrated here. It’s a Clint Eastwood movie after all. But this may just be a teaser poster and I still await a full poster that does justice to the movie.

Movie releases October 22nd, 2010.

Woody Allen has given hits and misses, but there is no denying the fact that his hits far outweigh the minor misses that cross his path. His upcoming ensemble dramedy ‘You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger’ has a pretty daunting star-cast and looks entertaining in the Woody Allen fashion. Here’s a new poster for the movie that highlights its star prowess.

Woody Allen’s You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger follows a pair of married couples, Alfie (Anthony Hopkins) and Helena (Gemma Jones), and their daughter Sally (Naomi Watts) and husband Roy (Josh Brolin), as their passions, ambitions, and anxieties lead them into trouble and out of their minds.

Though it looks much more stylish and refined that the other posters (Valentine’s Day) that display their huge star cast, I would have still preferred something other than random screenshots of the movie splattered all over the poster to make its point. I see at least four Anthony Hopkins right there. They’re seemingly random and that’s what the negative is. Nevertheless, the movie will hopefully be good enough to keep Allen’s winning streak going.

Movie opens September 23rd, 2010.

After last year’s brilliant success with ‘District 9′, most filmmakers are taking the indie route to their sci-fi films that are made on a very low budget and marketed virally. Such is the case with the upcoming sci-fi romance ‘Monsters’ which is made on a reported budget of $15,000 and has some great special effects, which has Hollywood going ga-ga over the director. Here is the first poster for the movie.

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life form began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain the creatures…… Our story begins when a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

I rather suggest to not watch the trailers at all just like I did with ‘District 9′ although thankfully that one didn’t spoil the major plot points. But this one probably might. Why take the risk? Anyway, the poster takes a very low key approach of taking a still from the movie and marking it as a miminalistic poster that works well in this context. Buzzed about indies are just my thing, so can’t wait for this movie to debut.

Movie opens in October in the U.S. and will roll out gradually among the rest of the world.

Russel Crow has lost his golden box office power these days while that can’t be said about his weight. Hoping to take a different route after ‘Robin Hood’ didn’t do too great, Crowe appears next in the dramatic thriller ‘The Next Three Days’ by Paul Haggis (Crash). The trailer appeared a few weeks ago but spoiled way too much to be recommended. This poster, however, is pretty subtle.

Life seems perfect for John Brennan until his wife, Lara, is arrested for a gruesome murder she says she didn’t commit. Three years into her sentence, John is struggling to hold his family together, raising their son and teaching at college while he pursues every means available to prove her innocence. With the rejection of their final appeal, Lara becomes suicidal and John decides there is only one possible, bearable solution: to break his wife out of prison. Refusing to be deterred by impossible odds or his own inexperience, John devises an elaborate escape plot and plunges into a dangerous and unfamiliar world, ultimately risking everything for the woman he loves.

It’s interesting that we can hardly see Crowe’s face in the poster yet we still have bold billing above the title. There’s a lot of stuff going on too, which adds to the depth of it. It will certainly be a great experience thanks to the talent involved, and that’s why I plan to go in fresh. I suggest you do too.

Movie opens 19 November, 2010
