Silly of me to think that after the success of Wanted, a Wanted 2 would be smooth sailing. First, the studio had no idea where to take the series. Then, they took a year off with no development on the film. Then it was announced that Angelina Jolie would be back from the dead to reprise her role. Shortly after, Jolie entirely backed out of the project. Seems like a project doomed for failure. And if the following rumor is true, it’s probably doomed for much more.

E! Online reports that the director Timur Bekmambetov (that’s a mouthful) has met Kirsten Stewart with intentions to cast her as a replacement for Angelina Jolie in ‘Wanted 2′. The Twilight star is said to join returning actor James McAvoy as “a young, ass-kicking assassin in the Fraternity.”

Now Stewart is a pretty girl and all, but playing a deadly assassin? Not quite her specialization. If you’ve seen any of her films, she plays awkward and shy teenagers to great extent (see ‘Adventureland’) and no-one will accept her as a female action star, especially when comparisons to Angelina Jolie will be made. Also, there’s the two more Twilight films that she’ll have to deal with first.

Who do you think should be cast in ‘Wanted 2′? Should there even be a ‘Wanted 2′?

Universal had a pitiful 2009 with none of their summer movies hitting the notes they were expecting. It’s time they went back to their trusted moneymakers. One of them is the surprise hit ‘Wanted’ from 2007. And writer Mark Millar says the script’s almost done.

Mark Millar tells IGN that he’s got a script almost done that will bring audiences the same action elements the original provided, but the scope will be international this time with Wesley being hunted by others.

“We’ve been going back and forth with some ideas and everything, but there’s a lot of people to please. I mean, there’s Angelina Jolie, there’s (director) Timur , and there’s Universal, you know? Everybody’s a perfectionist on it, so nobody wants to come in, cash the check, and take off. The screenplay’s almost at the stage [that] people are getting happy with it. Some people had some problems with it a few months ago and some people didn’t like it a month prior to that, the draft that was around.

I can’t remember exactly when it’s going to start shooting – I don’t know if I can even officially say – but it will be soon, and it’s almost ready, the script is almost ready.”

Did he mention Angelina Jolie? For those who’ve seen the first film, how can she be in the film? I really liked the visual style and action sequences in Wanted although the rest of the film could have been better.

Still, waiting for the sequel.
