Will Smith and Peter Berg are still planning a sequel to the 2008 superhero comedy.

Remember the 2008 superhero comedy starring Will Smith and Jason Bateman? The one with the hilarious first half and a mediocre second half that was sort of a let down? If you remember it well, you would also remember that it was a massive hit despite not being the most critically loved. And talk of a sequel has been in the press since that year but nothing really materialized which lead everyone to believe that it might be dead. Well, it’s not.

Speaking with Comic Book Movie , director Peter Berg let it be known that development on the sequel is still active and it’s just a matter of bringing all the busy people in a room together to move forward with it:

“We’ve been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and Akiva goldman and myself. We’re all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time. We did have a series of meetings last year and started to hash out an idea for sequel — and Will Smith actually had the idea — so I think it will happen, it’s just a question of timing.”

If a second film does happen, I really hope they ditch the hokey love angle and keep it in tone of the first half of the film which was truly original and fresh in how it portrayed a failed superhero who causes more damage than good and is hated by the city. It’s that kind of stuff that brought people into cinemas and not the poorly executed plot twists of the second half. It actually can be a potential superhero franchise for Smith but it all depends on how the script is.

What do you think?

Sequel plans dead in the water as both actresses refuse to be a part of the film.

After the humungous success of ‘Bridesmaids’, Universal has been itching to make another installment of the surprise hit and has been banding to get the cast together for it. Usually with most sequels, the actors are on board given the money. This is the rare case of a studio feeling completely helpless about it and looks like they will not have anything else to do other than scrap plans to make a sequel because the two main actors refuse to do the film at this point.

Ever since talk of the sequel was in the press, the only holdout was Kristen Wiig who wasn’t interested in doing it at the time. Then rumors swirled up that Universal is going ahead with a sequel without her character and will instead focus on the hilarious secondary character of Mellisa McCarthy which was a terrible idea. But then McCarthy herself has now affirmed the awfulness of the idea and re-inforced that she will be no part of it. Speaking to E! about this terrible idea, here’s what she had to say:

“God, I wouldn’t want to. I would never want to. I think it’s a terrible idea.”

That pretty much sums it up – she is interested in a sequel but wants nothing to do with it if it’s without Kristen Wiig involved. And as for Wiig, E! later caught with the actress at the Golden Globes and she pretty made much herself clear on the idea of a second ‘Bridesmaids’:

“We’re not planning on doing one. We had a special time making the first one, but we’re really excited to try something else.”

So there you go – No Wiig and consequently no Mellisa McCarthy pretty much puts the sequel dead in the water. Now this could change in a few years or even months if Wigg chances her stance or McCarthy is offered enough money to change her mind, but looks unlikely considering how clear the actors have made themselves at this point.

Do you want to see a sequel to ‘Bridesmaids’?

The sequel to Adam Sandler's 2010 hit yet poorly reviewed comedy now has a release date.

Adam Sandler has been giving quite a few hits in the past few years but his biggest hit so far in his career has been the 2012 ensemble comedy ‘Grown Ups’ where he starred alongside his mates Chris Rock, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and David Spade. Considering how awful ‘Jack and Jill’ was received, it would make sense for him to look for better material right? Nope, he’s instead doing a sequel to ‘Grown Ups’ which now even has a firm release date.

Sony has now dated the film for a July 12, 2013 release date placing it in the packed summer slate. Fred Wolf, writer of the original, is in talks to write the sequel as well. Adam Sandler is interested in returning to the character and this would be his first ever sequel which is kind of surprising. But he’s reportedly waiting to see the script before comitting. Looking at the quality of ‘Jack & Jill’ though, a couple of fat and fart jokes should be enough to have him on board. The rest of the cast is expected to return as well.

What do you think of a sequel? Is it really necessary to have another round of the characters again?

A third installment after 'Before Sunset' could be coming.

Anyone tired of the usual mainstream romantic comedies must check out ‘Before Sunrise’ and its sequel ‘Before Sunset’. They’re beautiful films made in a very simple but charming manner and both end up being equally good. Now, the actor of the film Ethan Hawke reveals that we could see a third film in the series.

Thanks to Vulture for noticing this little tidbit in an interview Hawke did with the French website AlloCine, where he mentions that he feels it’s time to visit those characters a third time:

“Well I don’t know what we’re going to do, but I know that the three of us have been talking a lot in the last six months about — all three of us have been having similar feelings that we’re kind of ready to revisit those characters. There’s nine years between the first two movies and if we made the film next summer, it would be nine years again. So we started thinking that that would be a good thing to do. We’re going to try to write it this year.”

I would love to see where the characters end up after so many years and Linklater has proved once already that even with a sequel he can maintain the spirit of the original and in fact build upon it greatly. If everything falls in place, this would be a sequel actually worth recommending.

What do you think?

Justin Lin Departs ‘Terminator 5′, With Possibility Of Returning

'Fast Five' director leaves but there's a chance of 'I'll be back'.

Remember when the rights to the Terminator franchise got sold once again after ‘Terminator Salvation’ disappointed? Arnold Schwarzenegger was back again excited to return to the franchise, this time with director of ‘Fast Five’ Justin Lin coming onboard with an exciting new take. Well, the project may have hit a roadblock because Lin just left.

The main reason why he had to leave the project is because it’s suddenly moving way too fast into production. Lin is contracted to work on ‘Fast and the Furious 6′ which won’t be done for quite some time, and this fast tracking means that he will have to depart the project after the financer Megan Ellison decided to get the movie out as soon as possible (even though there’s no confirmed stars or script yet). Basically, they want to churn out movies before James Cameron gets back the rights to the franchise.

But there is a chance for him returning considering the project slows down a little or they decide to wait until he’s done with the shooting of that movie. In my opinion, Justin Lin is the guy to go to for reviving a stale franchise and ‘Fast Five’ was an extremely fun movie that did just that. Aside from the co-incidence that there’s a ’5′ in both these projects, his excitement for the project in the interviews really looks like he has something great in mind.

Besides, it will probably be foolish to rush what could be the last chance for the franchise to be relevant again. Thoughts?

Are you ready for another 'Scary Movie' installment?

The spoof movie subgenre got a box-office revival with the first ‘Scary Movie’ and the success of the franchise gave birth to movies like ‘Epic Movie’ and ‘Meet the Spartans’, which ironically killed the subgenre with their awfulness. Now, the original champ is returning again with ‘Scary Movie 5′ and it now has writers.

Writers Stephen Leff, John Aboud and Michael Colton have been hired to write the screenplay for ‘Scary Movie 5′. Bloody Disgusting is reporting that studio wants some of the original cast members to be back for this installment. To that effect, offers are out to Anthony Anderson, Regina Hall and Kevin Hart all of whom have appeared in the previous films in some capacity. Missing from this list is the leading lady Anna Faris, who has since moved on to bigger comedy projects and probably won’t return. What about Charlie Sheen though?

But the real question is – what sort of horror movies will the film be spoofing this time around? Unlike movies like ‘Epic Movie’ that go for broke and try to add in every single film’s reference, the Scary Movie series is much more focused in what it spoofs. The first movie spoofed slasher movies, the second one spoofed haunted house films, the third one spoofed Asian horror flicks, while the most recent one took a jab at torture porn. This time, looks like ‘Paranormal Activity’ or ‘Insidious’ might be some of the targets and deservedly so. I just hope this is on par with the general fun factor of the series and not the lame rip-offs that followed.

The movie has a April 20, 2012 release date, which means things have to move fast. But let’s see what happens.

John McLane is going to Russia, with his son?

‘Die Hard’ has been the father of all modern action movies and it’s a franchise that Bruce Willis loves to do. While ‘Die Hard 4′ was criticized for being tame PG-13 and not in the contained space like the previous ones (and rightly so), it was still an entertaining action movie and made good money. Naturally, Bruce Willis and the studio was interested in a fifth film which Willis wanted to be ‘worldwide’ in terms of plot for some reason. Looks like he was right.

The apparent plot details of ‘Die Hard 5′ have been released, and it seems like it will involve John McLane and his son finding themselves “drawn into a conflict with local forces” in Russia. How the story reaches there is anyone’s guess. Also anyone’s guess is who plays and where did McLane’s son came from since we only saw his daughter the last time. Does Justin Long’s character from the last film turn out to be his son? Strangely, I’d prefer that plot twist over the news of Shia Lebeouf being cast as his son a la Indiana Jones. But fingers crossed. Either way, taking it worldwide betrays the spirit of the franchise and makes it more and more of a generic action movie than a focused one.

Also, Fox was previously going to lock Noam Murro for directing the movie. Apparently, the movie took too long because he went on and signed to direct the ’300′ prequel for Warner Brothers and had to drop out. Now, the studio has offered director John Moore the directing gig. John Moore has previously directed ‘Behind Enemy Lines’, ‘Flight of the Phoenix’ and most recently ‘Max Payne’ for the studio, and his track record is hit or miss at best. Still, he has enough action movie experience to put some faith in him.

The hilarious summer hit might be getting a (hopefully not horrible) sequel.

‘Horrible Bosses’ was not only the funniest movie of the year so far, but also a more original movie than ‘The Hangover 2′ was. And audiences welcomed the boss-killing comedy as it has made quite some money at the box-office. So naturally, the director is talking about a possible sequel.

We had already heard word that if a sequel is to happen, it might happen in the form of a spin-off with the same concept being applied to different aspects. For example, ‘Horrible Wives’ was something that was suggested. That definitely would be a great concept to do something of that sort but would also mean shedding a lot of the original cast members.

Now director Seth Gordon tells USAToday about the sequel:

“We’re talking about it.”

But there’s a problem with bringing all three bosses back. But to discuss it, we might need to head into spoiler territory. So for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie, stop right here and know that a sequel will probably arrive.

Spoiler-ish info after the jump.

Though Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Spacey can return, Colin Farrell will ideally not be able to considering the fate of his character at the end of the original. This is what Farrell himself has to say about his character:

“Bobby Pellitt, kung-fu master extraordinaire. So much fun. I love watching the film because I’m in it for three (expletive) minutes. It wasn’t ruined for me. I could just enjoy it. I can’t remember having such fun designing the physical world of a character as I have with that guy, down to the car that he drove, the fact that he loved karaoke. All of it.”

I actually felt the movie severely underused his character, but I guess that was the original plan anyway. Let’s see how a sequel manages to form itself without Farrell’s character.

We’ll keep you updated.

The God of Thunder will strike again on July 2013.

Marvel scored yet another winner earlier this with their superhero movie ‘Thor’, which earned commercial as well as critical acclaim and has made a lot of money for the studio by now. While we will get to see Thor thunder on screen with “The Avengers’ next year, fans will only have to wait another year to see him back in his own movie.

Walt Disney Pictures have confirmed that ‘Thor 2′ will release in 2013. The date it has planned for right now is July 26th, which pretty much puts it late in the summer and at good distance with ‘Iron Man 3′ which also releases that summer. The main stars are likely to return, but director Kenneth Branagh has already stated that he will not. Which is a shame, since his direction added a lot of drama to the mix.

Deadline also reports that writer Don Payne has been hired to work on the script. The guy worked on the ‘Thor’ script as well as ‘Rise of the Silver Surfer’, which is not inspiring.

Still stoked for a second ‘Thor’ after enjoying the first one more than ‘Green Lantern’.

Did Tom Hanks Just Confirm A ‘Toy Story 4′?

The voice of Woody apparently confirms that Pixar is making a new Toy Story movie.

Anyone following this site would know that I found ‘Toy Story 3′ to not only be the perfect end to the trilogy, it was one of the best movies of that year and an animated film in general. And while Pixar did say that it was going to be the last film of the series, we did get the pleasant and fun short film this year called ‘Hawaiian Vacation’ that played before ‘Cars 2′. And now, there’s word that Pixar may be working on another film in the series.

In an interview with MTV promoting his upcoming ‘Larry Crowne’, Tom Hanks (who voices Woody) was asked whether there’s going to be another movie in the franchise upcoming and this is what he had to say:

I think there will be yeah. Yeah, yeah. They’re working on it now. There you go.

Though I’m usually never happy about over-extending a franchise, I really feel that if Pixar comes up with a cracking story, Toy Story 4 could be a great addition to the series. Hawaiian Vacation was actually a great extension of Toy Story 3, and dealt with how the toys have adjusted to a new owner. So maybe there’s an angle there waiting to be explored.

But then again, it could be something needless and commercial like ‘Cars 2′ and would taint the franchise. What do you think?
